The 2006 NWR Awards

Wii - Best Use of Controller

by Steven Rodriguez - January 1, 2007, 9:00 pm EST

Nintendo World Report highlights the best of the year that was.

The Wii controller is supposed to bring us new gameplay experiences. Many developers didn't get the memo and ported old control schemes onto the remote/nunchuk combo without much thought. We wanted to give a shout out to the game that best uses the Wiimote, because we hope to see future games do an even better job with it. This year's winner will get the NWR Award for Best Use of Wii Controller as a token of our appreciation.

Wii – Best Use of Wii Controller

The NWR Award

Wii Sports

It's a baseball bat! No, it's a tennis racket! Now it's a golf club! The Wii freebie game is a perfect example of how versatile the Wii remote is. It was also the best example of how weak the original safety wrist straps on the controller were, prompting Nintendo to give everyone free replacements. Now only did Wii Sports prove how great the Wii controller is, it also indirectly gave all Wii owners some free stuff. Bribing us with swag is the best way to win an award from us. So, here you go, Wii Sports!

Runner-up: Trauma Center: Second Opinion

It was one of the first games people envisioned being on the Wii once we figured out what the hell that crazy remote controller-thing was capable of. Atlus obliged us, giving those waiting in Wii launch lines another great game to show off what the Wiimote is capable of. Playing doctor with plastic toys is okay, but when you can pick up the remote and save lives, isn't that much more fulfilling?

Also Nominated:

Excite Truck

Madden NFL 07
