The 2006 NWR Awards

Wii - Best Graphics

by Steven Rodriguez - January 1, 2007, 8:57 pm EST

Nintendo World Report highlights the best of the year that was.

GameCube Turbo, some call it. Does that mean the Wii can't sport some good-looking games? Of course not! The NWR Award for Best Wii Graphics goes to the best looking game available on the Wii, meaning that it's also currently the best looking game available on any Nintendo platform.

The NWR Award

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Nintendo's biggest gun at the Wii launch is also their best looking. A grown-up Link in a grown-up Hyrule makes for an impressive and convincing game world. Hyrule Field by itself is good enough to drive that home, but then the game takes you through the gloomy Twilight, the soft light of forests and the vastness of the mega-dungeons. If you were lucky enough to find Wii component cables to output a wide screen 480p signal, then you got to see the most beautiful Nintendo game ever made. That's saying something.

Runner-up: No Other Game Deserving

A few of our staffers got the crazy idea in their head that we shouldn't have awarded a Best Graphics Award to any Wii game this year. The only game really worthy of it (see above) is really a (nice) port of a GameCube game. Just about all the other Wii launch window games look like they were developed for, well...a GameCube Turbo. Some games have their own style, and some look pretty good for what they are. But none of them really look like Wii games. We understand it's the launch of a new console, but there were too many cases where developers (and publishers—we're looking at you, Ubisoft) simply did not make an effort to improve upon Wii ports of old games. Therefore, no other games were considered for the runner-up spot.

We hope that we don't need to do this again for the 2007 awards.
