The 2006 NWR Awards

Game Boy Advance - Game of the Year

by Steven Rodriguez - January 1, 2007, 8:39 pm EST

Nintendo World Report highlights the best of the year that was.

Chances of the GBA category returning in 2007 are moderate, but let's hope we'll be sifting through dozens of quality games instead of just a fistful. That's the future, however. In the present, handheld excellence should not go unrewarded. The best Game Boy Advance game of the year gets the NWR Award of the same name.

The NWR Award

Drill Dozer

Not only does it look good, it plays good. The premise: Hop into the littlest-tank-that-could and burrow through levels with a nose-mounted drill. It was definitely the most original GBA released in 2006, so it was easy to pick out amongst the dozens and dozens of licensed rubbish mucking up the handheld's library. If you haven't played it yet, we're giving you a reason. It's our favorite GBA game of the year. We're willing to bet it will be yours, too!

Runner-up: Final Fantasy V Advance

The fifth Final Fantasy game is a classic, and at its best on the Game Boy Advance. The addition of new job classes and an extra dungeon make it a great way to waste time on the go. If you like portable RPGs, there's none finer in 2006 than FFV Advance.
