Software and hardware sales forecasts regarding 3DS, DS, and Wii were revealed by Nintendo President Satoru Iwata at the recent investors meeting.
On the 3DS front, Nintendo predicts a 100 percent increase in software sales and an increase in hardware sales of almost 40 percent from the previous fiscal year. "From this fiscal term, we will be in the harvest time for the software sales of the Nintendo 3DS," Iwata explained.

UPDATE: Iwata dismisses possibility of "gatcha-type" sales of mystery items.
Nintendo is not and will not be in the business of selling mystery "gatcha-type" items as DLC according to CEO Satoru Iwata. The rules for 3DS downloads aren't changing just because the game's also available on a card.
When Nintendo begins releasing full 3DS retail titles via eShop this August, those titles will be tied to the specific 3DS system that downloads them in much the same way that the eShop exists for download-only titles today.
In the recent financial results briefing Iwata said "The digitally downloaded... Read more...

Japan and the U.S. have the highest connection rates.
The Japanese and U.S. markets have seen a steady increase in 3DS internet connectivity to their current rate of 70%, Nintendo revealed during their end-of-the-year investor's meeting.
This does not mean that 3DS owners in those two territories are necessarily playing games online, but only that they are actively connecting their systems to the internet. This rate is the highest that any of Nintendo's handhelds have ever achieved.

Nintendo has learned their lesson from the Nintendo 3DS launch.
The Wii U will launch with several content-rich titles, Satoru Iwata confirmed in the financial briefing.
The Nintendo 3DS, which launched in March 2011, was perceived as having a less-than-stellar launch lineup. The overall performance of the 3DS led Nintendo to drastically reduce the retail price just a few months into the system's lifespan.

The loss is a little bit better than expected, but it still sucks.
Nintendo officially announced a 43 billion yen loss during the fiscal year ending on March 31, 2012.
It is nearly a 20 billion yen decrease from the 65 billion yen loss forecast in January, but that was mainly because of an unanticipated depreciation of the yen over the past few months. Their sales were actually down 12 billion yen from their previous estimate.
