Cave Story Getting a Full-Featured eShop Release

This ain't no 3D remake; it's just all the content from other versions of the game on the 3DS.

Cave Story is getting another release on the 3DS, though this time it appears to have more in common with the Steam version Cave Story+ than the 2011 3DS remake.

This version, unveiled in this month's Nintendo Power, will include a laundry list of modes and features, including jukebox mode, adjustable controls, Boss Rush, Curly Story, Hell Time Attack, Wind Fortress, Nemesis Challenge, and more. It will also add a widescreen presentation and 3D effect.

However, it looks like the DSiWare version, which is out in North America, may be removed from the eShop before this comes out. It will remain in the DSi Shop, though.

We've reached out to Nicalis for confirmation about the game's contents and planned release window. We'll update this as we get more info.

Thanks zigg!

Sounds like this may be just what J.P. ordered! Unless it gets stamped with "I own it, but haven't played it" like the other two versions he owns...

Maybe I'll actually check it out this time. The price and content make it sound more appealing than Cave Story 3D...

This makes the 3D remake look more and more a weird side step for the Cave Story legacy. Anyway, nice to see the game getting a seemingly great 3DS treatment. Whether there is anyone left to buy or play Cave Story for the first time is a different discussion. It's probably more than I think it is.

I have never played the game and am debating which version to get. My problem is I have such a back log right now I am not sure if I will ever get around to playing it. Curse my luck not getting the flu.

It's not a very long game- you do want to go for the best ending though so you might need to get one of the worse ones on your first time through to get properly used to it. It's personally the best game I've ever played, put it at the top of your list!

This makes my decision to sale the 3DS game back in March when I was strapped for cash much less regretful.

...less regretful?

Has this company released any game besides Cave Story?

The price makes it sound more appealing? Um, I'm not sure what article you were reading, but the one above never specified a price... Sure, any 3DS download is guaranteed to be less than a retail 3DS card, but that doesn't mean it's a bargain, especially when you consider it'll be 90% identical to the DSiWare version which is already available for $9.99, as opposed to Cave Story 3D's fully 3D-modeled overhaul.

Since the WiiWare version is 1,200 points, it's a fair guess that this version will be at least $11.99, and quite possibly even higher (it will be offering portability and 3D effects, after all). That's too much to warrant another purchase from me since I already have the DSiWare version on my 3DS... Though, if they really are going to replace the DSiWare version with this, I suppose there could be a chance they'll consider this a free update (like the upcoming Mighty Switch Force update that will add new stages) and allow current owners to upgrade (or at the very least, for the extra $2)... Of course, I'm not holding my breath for that.

They have worked on (some of which are supposed to come out on Nintendo systems, but are also on PC): La-Mulana, Night, and NightSky.

VVVVVV on 3DS also, right?

DasmosApril 25, 2012

Soon Cave Story is going to have more versions than the first Resident Evil.

Ryadin91April 25, 2012

Random question, but wasn't VVVVVV developed by mojang? the guys behind minecraft. I suppose this relates since theyre both games published by the same company.

No, VVVVVV is an indie game developed by Terry Cavanagh.
