PGC E3 2006 Awards

Look But Don’t Touch Award

by Michael Cole - May 22, 2006, 6:47 pm EDT

The PGC staff picks its favorites from the year's biggest funfest!

This award goes to the most tantalizing game that was not playable on the show floor.

PGC's E3 Awards 2006!

Winner: Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Jonathan Metts: Nintendo supposedly wanted to only show Wii games that would be playable at the show (a rule they ignored from day one with Fire Emblem, Day of Crisis, etc.), but they definitely didn't mind starting the hype engine for Brawl, which is already assured megahit status if even half of Melee owners buy it.

Steven Rodriguez: I want to touch it. Now.

Karl Castaneda: I want Super Smash Bros. Brawl really badly. Probably more than any other next-gen game on any system. Probably more than any game at E3. Probably more than any game in years. Great new characters, awesome graphics, and online play? Sign me up, Sakurai-san!

Mike Gamin: Did we even have to vote for this one?

Runner-up: Super Paper Mario

Even Burchfield: When screens and video came in for Super Paper Mario, scores of people huddled around a single PC in the media center. The announcement that neither it nor any other GameCube games would be in Nintendo's booth was the single most crushing news of the show.

Michael Cole: Paper Mario. Multiple camera angles. A freaking huge "Mexican Hat Dancer" SMB Peach Toadstool sprite. Tweaked-out backgrounds with nonsensical math. Everyone wants to know how this wackiness comes together in Intelligent System's special adult brownie surprise, but it seems we will have to wait for answers.

Karl Castaneda: Super Paper Mario should've been playable, plain and simple. That being said, it was still a big surprise and looks great. We were all talking about how Twilight Princess was going to be the GameCube's last big hurrah, but with this new game from Intelligent Systems, that may not be the case after all. I couldn't be happier.
