RFN RetroActive Jr. Poll: Mario Games not in Maker

It's time for our next RetroActive poll: games not featured in Super Mario Maker!

Super Mario Maker is here, and our panel of supposed experts at Radio Free Nintendo is now knee-deep in Mario Making. We are also delightfully knee-deep in your suggestions for games that feature Mario that are not in Super Mario Maker. In fact, we received so many suggestions we decided we would cover them in multiple RetroActive segments. Galaxy 2, Sunshine, and Super Mario Bros. 2 were all popular suggestions, and we agree - those games would be fantastic RetroActive segments. You can look forward to more news on that front around the end of the year. We also were happily surprised to see the diversity of Mario RPG titles suggested. For now, with the beginning of the holiday game rush, we decided we wouldn't be able to give those games the time and attention they deserve, so we're going to give them their own poll in the future.

What we did find, buried among your suggestions, was an eclectic mix of Mario-related titles. From them, we selected four games for a RetroActive Jr. We decided to do a Jr. as these titles probably don't rise to the level of a full RetroActive, but should still provide fertile ground for conversation.

We selected the following titles:

  • Mario Tennis Power Tour (GBA)
  • Mario Party Advance (GBA)
  • Mario Pinball Land (GBA)
  • Super Smash Bros. (N64)

Get your votes in soon, the poll closes September 24, 10 PM Eastern!

Mario Party Advance never should have made it on store shelves. My vote goes to Mario Pinball Land. I could never forgive myself if I contributed to the staff suffering through Mario Party AdvanceĀ  :P:

Your mercy is acknowledged and thanked.

SURPISE! the poll doesn't matter because James is gonna make everybody play Alleyway!

If Tennis or Pinball get picked, I'm playing along.

If Mario Party Advance gets picked, I'm laughing at those who have to play along.
Not saying it's a bad game... but it's not good.

broodwarsSeptember 12, 2015

Ugh...nothing I want to play or hear about other people playing. Pass.

Coincidentally, I own those three GBA games, but have barely played them. I also still like the original Super Smash Bros., but not sure if there's anything interesting left to talk about with that.

What to choose, what to choose...

I'm hoping for smash or pinball. I never played pinball and haven't gotten into the original smash since Jr high

The main draw of Power Tour is the RPG mode and, well... you know. I don't think Smash Bros. on N64 has much to offer in light of all the subsequent versions, and I've never heard much of anything good about Mario Party Advance. So, it's an easy choice for me! Mario Pinball is a total oddity that was never really followed up, and it makes sense as a single-player game that could generate some good discussion with how it twists familiar Mario elements into mechanics that are older than video games themselves.

The answer is obvious no? One of these is a 10 and the others are not.

I was hoping for Mario is Missing, but Pinball Land or Tennis will do nicely. This will be my first time taking part in RetroActive.

I'll say we have something special in mind for each of these games.

And by we I mean "I have something special in mind for each of these games." I'll admit I have one that I really want, because the comedy is incredibly high. However, they're all good.

Who's ready to have a Mario Party? :smug:

nickmitchSeptember 13, 2015

I want Power Tour to win and I want a certain special guest on that episode.

Miz1k3September 13, 2015

Lets go pinball !!!

I was torn between Smash and Pinball. I haven't gotten into Smash since 11th grade and I downloaded it to my Wii U, but I don't have a classic controller so I can't play it because it's stuck in Wii Mode. If Smash wins the poll I'll buy one of those Gamecube looking classic controllers.

However, I voted Pinball because I LOVED Kirby's Pinball Land as a Kid, but I've never played this one so I'd like to try it.

I'm really curious as to the winner of this poll. I'd actually like to know so I can go to the flea market this weekend and look for a physical copy of Mario Pinball land or Mario Party Advance.

Hopefully they'll let us know the winners right away

Whoa, almost forgot to vote! I ended up choosing Mario Pinball Land, since it is the one I bought most recently.
