What is PGC Share?

What is LimeWire/Gnutella?

by the NWR Staff - May 14, 2001, 9:49 am EDT

In the spirit of Napster, PGC Share hopes to make P2P a mainstay in the Nintendo fan scene as well!

Enter LimeWire, a client for Gnutella, which has many similarities to the well-publicized program, Napster. Using Gnutella for transfers would mean that our users would be able to create a sort of virtual network of servers in that all files within people’s shared directories would be available for download from everyone else. So instead of setting up a few FTPs here and there we could have a hypothetically unlimited number of places for people to download from as more people participate. This service could also be a great way for people to distribute files to each other from other sites such as GameSpot as well, letting people come to one place for all available multi-media potentially. There was one drawback to this system though. Gnutella’s network is large with millions of files being shared everywhere. How could we help people find each other and find only the files they wanted? This is where LimeWire in particular came in handy. By changing a custom setting in LimeWire, people can choose to only connect to other people with the same setting. With this feature in place we could further aid people in finding only what they’re looking for and thus PGC Share was conceived.

While certainly we hope people will find this service useful during E3 we are also hoping that once E3 is over with that it will continue to be of use as well. With so many people having older movies, wav files, midis, and other file types sitting on their hard drives we are hoping people enjoy sharing media for their shared passion in gaming. Hopefully with PGC Share in place this will be a reality and people will have another resource at their disposal for getting the latest and best media for the GameCube anywhere.
