What is PGC Share?

by the NWR Staff - May 14, 2001, 9:43 am EDT

As you've been able to tell the Planet GameCube server is already having the living daylights pounded out of it. So how will we get you all of the best media from the show? Find out here!

The staff of Planet GameCube would now like to introduce you to what we hope will become a major force in people gaining access to more video game related multi-media than ever before. We’d like to call it “PGC Share” and this tutorial will hopefully bring you up to speed on not only what it is, but also how to get software installed and configured so that you can use it, and finally giving you some hints on how to make the most of it as well.

With E3 approaching and with server bandwidth costs already piling up the Planet staff tried to come up with a way to be sure people would be able to get movies, sound files, and even extensive collections of images from the site without killing ourselves. At first we thought the answer would be in getting the help of faithful readers in setting up mirrors for people to access. Unfortunately the one major flaw with this idea was that while many people believe that they can use unlimited bandwidth with their hosting services if you look carefully at the fine print this is almost never the true case. In most terms of use contracts providers either strictly prohibit setting up mirrors or they make provisions that state if the majority of your bandwidth is being consumed by large file transfers the terms of your normal agreement are void. This risk to the readers who were only trying to help us made us nervous to the point that we decided we needed to try to find another answer.
