Truth be told, our seventh game is no longer as new as it says it is.
New Super Mario Bros.
After a hiatus from traditional Mario Bros. games, Nintendo finally brought the series back in 2006, while at the same time implementing elements that have not been seen in a Mario game in nigh a decade. New Super Mario Bros. on the DS marked the first new Mario Bros. game since Super Mario Sunshine in 2002, and was the first side-scrolling title to star Mario since Super Mario Land 2 in 1992. It came as a bit of a shock for Nintendo fans to see their beloved, bulbous Italian plumber go back to his roots, but it was a welcome addition to the Super Mario Bros. series.
New Super Mario Bros brought back many of the things that gamers were familiar with, and built upon them with the implementation of new items and power-ups. While old favorites such as the Fire Flower and Starman made their triumphant return to the traditional Mario games, Nintendo still gave fans other new power-ups, such as the Blue Koopa Shell and the Mega Mushroom, to keep things fresh. Wall jumping, an element that was first introduced in Super Mario 64, made its first appearance in a side-scrolling Mario game as well. The mix of old-school elements coupled with new ideas suited the game perfectly.
From the first Super Mario title to Super Mario Galaxy 2, Nintendo consistently delivers great controls time and time again. Likewise, as with any core Mario game, the controls in New Super Mario Bros. are exceptionally executed. Additionally, the touch screen is also used to a certain extent throughout the game; for example, to use a stored power up, you simply touch the item on the bottom screen. Unlike some other DS games, the touch screen mechanics are not forced and intuitively compliment the design.
The visuals in the game are quite different from previous 2D Mario titles. This time around, Mario is no longer a 2D sprite, but rather a 3D model very similar to the one that was used in Super Mario 64 DS. The 3D models are implemented wonderfully into the 2D visual design and really make New Super Mario Bros. feel similar to games such as Super Mario Bros 3 and Super Mario World.
New Super Mario Bros. on the DS is an amazing title that appeals to hardcore Nintendo fans and casual gamers. The implementation of the touch screen, new power-ups, and classic feel bring something to the table for everyone. When it is all said and done, New Super Mario Bros. is an absolute blast to play and should be in every DS owner's collection.
