PGC Pre-Order Report

Overview

by the NWR Staff - October 8, 2001, 1:33 am EDT

Here's a general look at the pre-order situation overall and what we found...

Pre-Order Status

Most stores were not taking pre-orders for GameCube at this time and even stated they weren’t planning on taking any either. Many reported that retailers had stated that Nintendo had actively discouraged pre-orders.

Prominent exceptions were stores in the GameStop chain: GameStop, Babbages, Funcoland and Software Etc. which either are taking pre-orders or were. Frequently, most had discontinued pre-orders or sold out of pre-orders for the initial launch shipment.

However, quite a few places were doing pre-orders for GameCube games.

Cost

Pretty universally, GameCube is being listed as $199.99 except where bundles were in place. Most system pre-orders were at least $50, though some only required you put something down.

Color

This varied the most from store to store. Some pre-orders let you select color, others not. A few retailers suggested that they would be getting equal numbers of Indigo and Black for launch.

Would You Like to Make That a Cube Combo?

There are a few online bundles but as of now, the retailers that are pre-ordering are not requiring a bundle. There is some indication that Electronics Boutique will be one of the major retailers doing pre-order bundles for GameCube but if this is true it has yet to be announced.

Freebies

Freebies were almost nowhere to be found. The notable exception is the LucasArts pre-order for Rogue Leader. Freebies are usually used as an extra incentive to secure pre-orders and with hardly anyone doing pre-orders, the lack of bundles is understandable.

Conclusion

We’re planning on following this up with more information very soon. If you have anything to add, please send it in!
