In addition to the new dual-crossbow hunter, don't forget that Tetra, Toon Link, Skull Kid, and the King of Hyrule are showing up in the title!

Nintendo revealed that Linkle, a new original character, is going to make her debut appearance in the upcoming Hyrule Warriors Legends for 3DS.

Linkle, a character concept for the original Hyrule Warriors release, is a woman who lives in a village of cuccos and favors dual-crossbows to dispatch her enemies. She also seems to favor a color scheme evocative of Link's shades of green, but in a cloak and hood as opposed to a tunic. Her special attack is a spinning kick.

In addition to the new character, Nintendo made sure to show off that Tetra, Toon Link, Skull Kid, and King of Hyrule (from Wind Waker) were also being added to the game.

When the 3DS title releases in March 25, 2016 in North America it will be paired with a free 3DS Home Menu theme for a limited time.

Bad name aside, it's great to have another official female character in the franchise. Now give her a starring role.

I agree. With those weapons, do you think she could be the start of a re-sparking of the Crossbow Training line? I can 100% see her holding down some games with that as a starting point.

azekeNovember 12, 2015

I really he is of some kind relation to Tingle, based on the name.

I'm totally down with a new game in the franchise starring her, Zelda and Sheik. This needs to happen in my lifetime.

It would be great if this is Tingle's sister. I could see some great comedic pieces where the goofy, clumsy Tingle is contrasted by the more serious, competent Linkle. All the while their father bemoans their shared obsession with fairies and the color green.

This sounds like an April Fools joke.

Which is why it's awesome.

At least Tingle didn't coerce her into slavery for him.

Nintendo's knack for awful hardware and software names is spreading to their game characters as well, now.

They didn't named her New Link U.

EnnerNovember 12, 2015

That cool piece of concept art is real!

I hope the Wii U version will get the new characters without have to buy the 3DS version.

StratosNovember 12, 2015

Most of it has been confirmed to be available as paid DLC on the U version.

KhushrenadaNovember 12, 2015

Linkle was revealed back when Hyrule Warriors was released on Wii U but she didn't make the cut at the time. Looks like they are including her now. I believe the idea behind her was that she was Link's sister but the internet took it as the possibility of a Girl Link finally existing or being thought about and seems to be the way people are taking her reveal now.

KhushrenadaNovember 12, 2015

Here's the NWR article on her that even revealed her name to Linkle back then:

WahNovember 12, 2015

Linkle! Buhahaha! sounds like something I would call my pet doggy, which I would then KILL!

StratosNovember 12, 2015

This is really a missed opportunity. They should have named her Aryll if she was Link's sister.

WahNovember 12, 2015

Or shemale because she looks like it! Buhahhaha!

broodwarsNovember 12, 2015

I kind of feel that giving her a separate name from Link kind of reinforces the idea that "Link" can never be a girl. Girls can never be the hero on the same scale as the legendary character. Instead, they're "Linkle", a "separate but equal" hero who nevertheless only exists because of her male counterpart.

I kind of feel that Nintendo would have made a stronger statement about gender equality if they had just named her "Link" OR if they had just created a whole new female character altogether who doesn't look like Link but stars in the next Zelda.

WahNovember 13, 2015

Wow that sexist remark is even to low for a Demon to make fun off, well done Mr. Broodwars!
Would you like to be my Evil Apprentice!
Buhahaha!

ShyGuyNovember 13, 2015

Well she looks cool, I like the dual weilding crossbows.

WahNovember 13, 2015

My duel-wielding Crossbow would like some fun with her!
Buhahaha!

KhushrenadaNovember 13, 2015

You may want to see a doctor about that. That's not evil. That's a serious condition.

WahNovember 13, 2015

Demons are like echidnas we have four penis's!

azekeNovember 19, 2015

I love Setz's "Hurl Warriors" series.

He made a new comic about Linkle:

That's pretty good!

The girl-Link concept always seemed odd to me.  The Zelda series already has a prominent female character in Zelda so if they wanted to make a game that stared a female wouldn't it make more sense to have Zelda in the starring role?  Why would you change the gender of an iconic male character when you have an iconic female character in the same series that fans have pretty much been begging to have her own game for decades?

Link isn't really a character though, he's supposed to be a self insert that represents the player. Or if you go by the official timeline Link is not the same person every time rather a reincarnation or descendant. I don't see why any particular Link couldn't have been born with an XX instead of an XY.

AdrockNovember 19, 2015

The character of Zelda is a plot device. In most games in the series, the player is saving her. If Nintendo developed a game starring Zelda, it would actually have to care about plot. I'm surprised Nintendo didn't introduce a female Link sooner. Without any direct romantic implications between Link and Zelda, it doesn't matter if Link is male or female. Nintendo got close to going that road with Marin and Midna, but it never commit because reasons. Additionally, Marin turned into a bird and Midna supposedly severed the Twilght Realm from Hyrule forever so it isn't even like it matters.

I think of Link as a character, just one with not much development or background story.  But I'm remembering when Zelda was an NES series.  Back then no kid talked about Link as a player avatar.  He was a character like Mega Man or Mario or Simon Belmont.  And that made sense then because a sprite with a name and a paragraph description in the manual was what 90% of videogame "characters" were.  I think this self insert stuff is more of a retcon to justify Nintendo's generally poor storytelling and inability to keep up with industry standards regarding plot.

When I think of a self insert I like of something like in most Western RPGs where you completely customize what your character looks like.  If they're going to really commit to Link being a representation of the player then they should go all out and allow that full character customization, of which gender would just be a part of it.

But I would rather play as Zelda herself.  How complicated of a plot does that even need?  Link is captured or busy with something else so Zelda has to be the hero.  Or even better they make two games simultaneously where there are separate quests for Link and Zelda and then they come together for the ending.

Dan LaserNovember 19, 2015

I can’t believe Ganondorf’s fanfiction character Linkle is going to be in Hyrule Warriors!!

Linkle looks cool and fun to play as. And another crossbow training game would be pretty sweet too, although who knows if we will see Linkle outside of Hyrule Warriors.
