The dark side of the Pokémon franchise will release later this year.

Nintendo has announced the newest Pokémon spinoff, Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon, will release later this year.

The fifth set of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games promises a "sweeping tale of adventure and mystery", and based on the previous games will include direct control over the Pokémon.

PSMD will release in Japan this fall, with North American release this winter and Europe in early 2016. It will be the fourth game or set of games to be localized, with only the WiiWare versions skipping the West.

Story updated to remove unconfirmed speculation about playable characters and storyline.

Etrian Mystery Dungeon was received very well so hopefully they have learnt from the mistakes that were made with Gates To Infinity.

The mistakes made in Gates to Infinity were mostly based around the fact that they were woefully unprepared to create a mystery dungeon game in three dimensions. So yes, Etrian Mystery Dungeon probably helped that somewhat, as well as models of all the existing Pokemon floating around out there.

I actually thought Gates to Infinity was the best one in the PMD series yet-the only thing that I really didn't like was having to max your team rank to unlock all the songs in the sound test.

Gates to Infinity was my first PMD game, and I really enjoyed it. It was a bit easy other than some boss battles, but I found it charming and enjoyable to play. Excited for this new one.

I liked the games on the DS, and then tried the demo for the 3DS game. What I didn't like about it was how zoomed-in the view was, and so I ended up not buying that game. If they fix that issue, I'll be interested in this one.

The question is: is it Super enough for the James Jones seal of approval?
