Sin & Punishment Heading to Virtual Console

...in Japan!

For years, gamers in the States have been rallying for Treasure's N64 shooter, Sin & Punishment, to receive a release in North America. There seemed to be some hope back in February, when George Harrison said that previously Japan-only games might have a chance of crossing over on Virtual Console.

Well, it's put-up or shut-up time, because, according to Nintendo's Japanese website, the game is scheduled to drop onto the service in September. Time will tell on whether or not we'll finally get a chance to play it, but it's worth noting that there's already a hefty amount of English voice acting, so localization would be minimal.

Cross those fingers, folks.

Talkback

Oh man, the ultimate teaser. Thanks for getting our hopes up again, Nintendo.

Ok, what needs to happen: Game remake. Then, when you buy the remake, you should receive the first one free on the VC. That's what I think. That game is just perfect for a Wii edition.

Naw. Release the first one on the VC. Then, when everone is talking about how great it is, etc., etc... announce that you have a sequel in development. face-icon-small-wink.gif

Oh, and release the original on the VC the same week Super Mario Bros. 2 JPN is released.

They really have no excuse not to release this one. Not only are the game's voices in English, they've already localized the game for China (on iQue)! It will be interesting to see what happens though, since with Nintendo's single monthly N64 release, not releasing this would mean no N64 games for the rest of the world in September.

I swore over this. Out loud.

Good job newsbot.

Do the right thing here, NoA.

Don't make me grab a chunk of aircraft carrier and fly over to Redmond on it.

Pretty much all the N64 games out in Japan have come to America, right? I think we should be optimistic here.

Also, the suggestion of a Wii remake for Sin & Punishment is great. It really would fit perfectly with Wii controls, not to mention it deserves to find a wider audience.

My favorite level is the naval battle, in which you are standing on a flying platform that swoops all over a fleet of ships that are shooting crazy crap at you.

WiiWare with pointy controls, plz.

I'll definately pick it up, I tried to play it on emulation but like most emulation games it wasn't the same as playing on the system.

Oh man, this is definitely good news. I'm optimistic because all they really need to translate are the menus and a few lines of text in the tutorial and at the ending. That's really it. Once it is in VC format, there's no excuse for it not to happen. The game was slated to come out in North America after all until Conker bombed and the N64 era was over.

It's ironic that this was reported today. The subject of N64 games came up this morning while talking to a co-worker and he asked me what my favorite one is. I replied no disrespect to the excellent Zeldas, but Sin & Punishment is my favorite hands down. It really is amazing and I still go back to play it every so often. The levels are so memorable and crazy. It's intense and a blast to play--everyone needs this game. A $10 purchase price on VC is a steal.

Awhile back I read an interview with one of the guys who made S&P, who said something along the lines that Treasure would love to do a sequel to it, if only the game would get a little better recognition... For S&P to hit VC and then spawn a Wii sequel would be a dream come true. Jonny's right: the game's shooting and sword fighting would be a perfect fit for the Wii remote.

We need to get Treasure exclusively developing for the Wii!

The person who made that video is disgustingly good at the game.

Regarding a future Wii sequel, it would need to put the sword motion control on the nunchuk so you wouldn't lose your shooting target every time you had to swing the sword.

That's a good point Jonny. The shooting/sword fighting combo comes so fast it wouldn't be very workable to do it otherwise. Having the sword on Nunchuck would allow you to chop at more things instantaneously like you can in the N64 version and it would be a lot more fun too.

Again, I'm really hoping this makes it. NOA even had a S&P website at one time for crying out loud! Hopefully they'll get it to the North American VC before Xmas so all of you can see why I'm cucoo for cocoa puffs about this game.

And the person who made that video is ridiculous. He/she doesn't take a single hit and shoots darn near everything. I've had good runs--but nothing that good. But it's a real testament how fun the game is to replay, simply because there are so many potential things to shoot and earn points which lead to earning extra lives. It's a shooter fan's dream come true.
