Nintendo Launches Nintendo DS Ad feat. Wildboyz

What do a lioness, an elephant, Steve-O, Chris Pontius, and Nintendo DS have in common? They all get touchy-feely in this new commercial.

In the newest Nintendo DS commercial, Steve-O nearly gets mauled by a lion while Chris Pontius frags away on Metroid Prime: Hunters while riding atop an elephant. Oh, Chris also says "ass". Welcome to the Nintendo DS hype train.

The commercial was directed by Jeff Tremaine and stars both Wildboyz as they compete wirelessly in the African wild. The highlight is when a female lion hanging out underneath Steve-O's tree decides to climb up and say hello. The event was completely unscripted, but since Steve-O didn't get hurt, the scene was left in. The ad begins airing on MTV today.

Hit the link above to download both the commercial and a "making of" video from Nintendo's official website.

Ya know, its cool and all that Nintendo is going after an older audience, but I still can't help but feel that these ads aren't really nintendo. It gets to me in a way...Kind of goes against a lot of what I think is right.....

I know what you mean, Palezer0. This ad is actually okay by me, but the print one is lame, in my opinion. However, I do think Nintendo is pointed in the right general direction. Cooler, more adult-oriented marketing is needed for Nintendo to try to change its "kiddie" image. If that's even possible.

its good to see something-anything
my personal preference for a commercial would be in an office space type setting, that stylus is perfect for misleading idiot bosses into thinking you are doing work/taking notes during a meeting when you would really be laying a coworker- those could be some funny commercials

Since this relates to DS advertising I'll mention it here. On WWE.com anytime the letters 'D' and 'S' appear in a word together they're printed in big letters. Apparently it's a Nintendo promotion. You can see it here.

It's a neat idea though it's so subtle I don't know how it could be that effective.

Hahaha, that commercial is awesome. If you guys have seen the show Wildboyz, then you know that the commercial fits perfectly.

Nintendo Advertising +1

As Slappy Squirrel said, "Now that's comedy."

IanSane, that's psychological reinforcement. I'm surprised they're doing that. It's almost like brainwashing because viewers won't even realize, immediately, what they're being made to think about, but still it's there and it's the logo. It's a creative way to claim mindshare.

It really seems in this add that there trying to break through the kiddie image that they have had over the years.

MysticGohan24October 28, 2004

heh, Nintendo has the dominance going. I love the new approach.

KDR_11kOctober 28, 2004

Helps to set the DS apart from their other stuff. Now if they only had a launch title that set it apart as well...

Hostile CreationOctober 29, 2004

Nintendo really, really needs to let you download the stuff onto your computer. That crap never loads for me, and it takes forever to watch it once. Anyone know someplace I can download for real?

KDR_11kOctober 29, 2004

When I click on the link to the video it downloads.

MysticGohan24October 29, 2004

Samehere, but that may be cause I'm on adsl, but who knows face-icon-small-tongue.gif

The Nintendo site just hates me. It takes ages for just a picture to load, but it's the only site that does it, that I know of. Damn. Might be some technicaly problem, but if it is I have no idea what it is.
You mean when you click the link, a transfer box pops up and it downloads onto your computer, onto your hard-drive? Or opens in another window and downloads in it? Cuz I'm gettin' pissed, and it'd be really convenient if I didn't have to look everywhere else for videos all the time.

KDR_11kOctober 30, 2004

It opens a new page that points to the file, resulting in a blank page and a download dialogue in Opera. I think IE just kills the blank page and only displays the download dialogue. Maybe your browser has a wrong behaviour linked to that MIME type.

Still doesn't work face-icon-small-tongue.gif

But I got it somewhere else, so it's alright.
