What is PGC Share?

PGC File Distribution and Tips

by the NWR Staff - May 14, 2001, 5:36 pm EDT

Want to know how to get the most out of PGC Share? Check out our file naming schemes and tips for LimeWire use so you don't miss out!

In order to make PGC Share work as effectively as possible for the distribution of our own files we’ll be trying to use uniform naming conventions as often as possible for our own files. If you have files to share with others that aren’t from Planet GameCube you may want to adopt similar naming schemes to help people find them as well.

For E3 this year all files Planet GameCube will be distributing will have the prefix [PGC]E32k1_ on them. In particular we have one horrifying test MPG floating around if you can find it by the name of [PGC]E32k1_Test already floating around. Don’t say we didn’t warn you if you dare open it.

In order then to find a PGC piece of multi-media using PGC Share you would want to do the following:

  • Before looking for files you may want to see how many people and files you are currently connected to for reference. To see this information look at the bottom of the LimeWire window where you’ll see the following:

Connection Info

  • Here you will see the number of other people you’re currently connected to, the number of files all of those people are sharing combined, and the amount of space all of those combined files would consume. Looking at this as a gauge you can get an idea of what kind of general search results you should realistically expect

  • Start out on the Search tab for LimeWire

  • In the Search box type: [PGC]E32k1

  • Next to the Search box you could then choose the specific type of file you’re looking for whether it be Images, Video, or others. This setting will help refine your search if you’re only looking for something specific

  • Click on Search

Search Example

  • Once the animated lime stops rotating you should then see whatever files with that naming scheme are available

  • In order to download a file you can either double-click on it immediately or you can highlight multiple files and then click on the Download All button to initiate downloads

  • Depending on the connection between you and the other person you may be able to download a file and you may have to wait… this all depends on the number of people queued for transferring files from that person already.

  • Sometimes you’ll also be able to begin downloading a file but either because of a disconnect or other network problem the file won’t finish downloading. As in the case when connecting to either an FTP or HTTP server as well this process can sometimes be frustrating. Be patient and hopefully you’ll get good results.

With those basics out of the way hopefully you’ll be able to begin downloading movies from your fellow PGC fans like a pro. If, however, you have problems the best resource available will be our own chat room on IRC or even our Forum.

Please remember, one of the best things about PGC Share is that like with Napster it is a great thing to leave open even when you’re away from your computer or aren’t actively using it so other people can benefit from the library of files you’ve compiled. If people use PGC Share in this manner theoretically an unlimited number of servers could eventually be available with files for you to share with your fellow Nintendo fans. Please now enjoy, and don’t abuse this resource.
