Daan's List Of What Makes Japan Unique

by Daan Koopman - January 15, 2014, 10:49 pm EST

Daan brings game selling dogs, adorable ghosts and funny Mii people to our attention!

Hatsune Miku: Project mirai 2 - Nintendo 3DS
It is no surprise that we ourselves love some rhythm games around these parts, but why did we of all things include a Vocaloid extravaganza? The answer is actually quite simple: it is one of the most cleverly put together games out there. It introduces the Theatrhythm Final Fantasy series, but goes wild with it and makes sure that there is always something going on the screen. It makes loops, swift turns and always put you at the edge of your seat, even if you are playing on easy. You can now play it in two different set-ups, with either touchscreen or button control options to boot. With roughly 50 songs to play through and many trinkets to toy around with, Hatsune Miku: Project mirai 2 is a game that is truly worth the price of admission. You can check out my review of the title right here!

Tomodachi Collection: New Life - Nintendo 3DS
If you ever asked yourself why the Miis were invented, the answer should always end with Tomodachi Collection. This quirky title takes the social elements of Animal Crossing but puts them in a setting that is truly beyond belief. Do you want to see a friend's Mii present the news like no other? Or how about putting a team of Miis in a rap concert and cry from utter joy? This and more is possible when you put a bunch of people in a single apartment building and give them all a joyful life. Maybe not too joyful or else two will pair and marry one another. Or maybe you do want that and want to end up with a child later? It is hard to say, but honestly it is your choice and creative instinct that makes this tick.

Monster Hunter 4 - Nintendo 3DS
I know what you are thinking and you are not wrong. A bunch of people couldn't get on with the previous Monster Hunter titles because of how lengthy the tutorials were. Monster Hunter 4, however, is a big improvement and you learn all that you need to know in the first hour. The progression line has also been reduced to one, as you will unlock missions that can all be played alone, locally or online. It all plays really smooth and the characters have more free movement than ever before. The presentation is also extremely colorful and are a must view in the 3D aspects of the system. The keyword for Monster Hunter 4 is accessibility and it is no surprise then that the game sold so well.

Youkai Watch - Nintendo 3DS
When Level-5 takes an anime world and make it fully fleshed out, they create some truly wonderful pieces of software. These charming bits can be found in Youkai Watch and this is why it deserves to be here. While this is more of a title focused on children, it doesn't talk down to them. It tries to deliver a friendlier RPG for all ages with a cast that is mostly filled with ghostly spirits. These aid a boy or girl of your choosing to battle others who have some bad intentions in mind. With the touchscreen, you control the battles and play small minigames to keep the Youkai in good shape. The story is quite entertaining as you learn the personality traits of these spirits and see them banter in a light and comical way. Youkai Watch might not be a game tailored for the experienced gamer, but it does leave a lasting impression. Danny talked about the demo a while back, so you always could learn more over here!

Darumeshi Sports Shop - Nintendo 3DS Download Software
Nintendo's first free-to-play venture is somewhat of a weird one, but my oh my is it a joyride. Darumeshi Sports Shop offers ten games, which are all based around the art of baseball. You get a trial version of the first one for free, after which you will have to go to the shop owner to purchase the rest. Did I mention that the shop owner is a dog? You can however negotiate about the pricing by giving the dog gifts (which will progress the story) he can use or eggs, which he will gladly eat any given number of. You can also collect coupons by progressing well enough through the games, which can result in some major price drops. One game I got for 50 yen, which is quite incredible to say the very least. It helps that all the games are fun and will put you through some rough challenges, which makes getting those rewards all the sweeter. Why not check out Danny's impressions for more information?

Awesome list Daan! :) Just a quick question though... Are E.X. Troopers and Tomodachi Collection text-heavy games? Since I can't read Japanese, I can only get away with playing rhythm games like Taiko, Project Mirai and Daigasso (lol). Monster Hunter 3G and 4 are exceptions since I've been playing too much MH (since MHP2G) to figure out what to do in the game despite not being able to read any text. Thanks! And looking forward to more JP recommendations. :))
