Field Training

by the NWR Staff - November 26, 2001, 12:26 am EST

Welcome to PGC Boot Camp!

In this section we'll be walking you through the various Field Training missions, just to help you get your feet on the ground. If you can't complete Field Training, you'll never even compete in Campaign mode. Hopefully the following strategies will aid you in the battle against Blue Moon.

Mission:Troop Orders
Difficulty:If you can't complete this, your name is bluecube.
Ideal CO:Nell
Enemy CO:Olaf

Strategy:Erm, well there's no real strategy needed here. Nell will walk you right through the mission from beginning to end.

Mission:Terrain Intel
Difficulty:Easier than (insert your mom joke here)
Ideal CO:Nell
Enemy CO:Olaf

Strategy:Again, Nell will take you through this mission by the hand. Be sure to remember her very helpful intel about terrain and such. Again, a very easy stage.

Mission:Base Capture
Difficulty:Mind-numbingly easy
Ideal CO:Nell
Enemy CO:Olaf

Strategy:Here Nell will show you how to capture bases and use them to your advantage. Taking out the tanks is easier than Nell lets on; just stick to the mountains and you'll have Olaf crying over the river that prevented his movement.

Mission:Unit Repair
Difficulty:Easy
Ideal CO:Nell
Enemy CO:Olaf

Strategy:Just follow Nell's directions and you should be fine. Olaf isn't too bright you know. At any rate you'll learn about the Join command and how to heal your units. It's pretty simple really. After she teaches you the "Join" command the rest of the level is in your hands. Nell will give you some advice if you ask.

Your best bet is to use a healthy Mech Unit to protect the bridge and take out one of Olaf's tank units. Since the space right before the bridge is Forest, you'll have 2 terrain defense points protecting you. In fact, the Tank unit won't be able to harm your unit if you attack first. Line your Infantry along the river shore and wait for Olaf's units to try and cross the river. By the next turn your Tank unit will be fully healed. Most likely, Olaf will have the weakened Tank unit retreat, but if it doesn't? Take out the weakened Tank unit with your Mechs, and then move up your healthy Tank to take on Olaf's. You should still have a free Mech unit. (If your Mechs have less than 5 HP, join them.) If you do, you can attack the Tank from the river. The rest of the mission should be a cinch, as you have superior numbers and better terrain.

Mission:APC ABCs
Difficulty:Easy
Ideal CO:Nell
Enemy CO:Max

Strategy:After Nell shows you how to supply units via an APC, she'll also instruct you on how to use your newly assigned Artillery unit. Make note of its range with the B button. A good plan is to have your Tank sit on the Allied city in front of the most eastern bridge and just wait for Olaf to come to you. Your Artillery will make a big difference in this battle so position it carefully: ideally one space west of the City in front of the bridge. Send two Infantry units and the other Mech to the Neutral cities, and they can also help damage that pesky enemy Artillery. The Mech will probably take it out in one shot. If you prefer to play it safe, just wait till your Tank can go crush it. It's probably faster to destroy all the units rather than attempt to capture Olaf's HQ.

Mission:Tank Ops
Difficulty:Easy
Ideal CO:Nell
Enemy CO:Olaf

Strategy:Alright, this is the first mission that Nell will let you take full command. Those Md Tanks might look scary, but with the right Terrain and Intel they can be defeated. Your first goal (as Nell will suggest) is to destroy the units between the two rivers. Move your Tank onto the Neutral City just above Olaf's Tank. You'll get some good damage in there. Next, send some infantry down to capture the Neutral Cities south of your HQ. Load up a Mech into the APC and have it drop off on the Neutral City just north of where you moved your Tank. Your Artillery should be somewhere near there as well. Just make sure it is protected from enemy fire by hiding it behind your front lines. Move the rest of your infantry as you wish. Just make sure to take the best Terrain as possible and fight defensively.

Olaf won't bother moving his Md Tank, so be thankful for that. After you've decimated forces between the two rivers, rest up your units as you see fit and then it is time to take on that nasty Md Tank. First, check to see how far the Monster can attack with your B button, and then carefully arrange your troops just out of its range. Your easiest way to victory is to use an Infantry to lure it out and then hammer it with your Artillery. Your other option is to block the bridge with your APC and Tank units and send Infantry to capture Enemy HQ. This choice it up to you, but remember you'll be docked points for destroyed units.

Mission:Copter Tactics
Difficulty:Easy
Ideal CO:Nell
Enemy CO:Olaf

Strategy:This is a pretty straightforward stage. Just try and hold off the Blue Moon forces off for two days while you capture the Enemy HQ. The best way to hold off Olaf's horde is to block the bridges with a Tank and APC units.

Mission:Air Assault
Difficulty:Easy
Ideal CO:Nell
Enemy CO:Olaf

Strategy:This battle begins with a scripted assault from Olaf, destroying an Md Tank, B-Copter and Tank units. Nell isn't too pleased as you might imagine. However she'll point out that both the Fighter and Bomber in Olaf's unit are lacking in both Fuel and Ammunition. So all isn't lost. Move your units up to the bridge and have the B-Copter unit guard it. Don't worry about the Bomber and Fighter. They'll run out of fuel and crash by the next turn. Next carefully move your front lines: you'll want the Md Tank to lead the charge. You'll notice that the A-Air unit you've been given is extremely effective on Infantry and Mech units. They're even able to finish off weakened Tanks and even Md Tanks! Just don't let it get ambushed by another ground unit.

Mission:Air Defense
Difficulty:Easy
Ideal CO:Nell
Enemy CO:Olaf

Strategy:After Nell explains the way Rockets and Missiles work, she leaves this mission up to you. What we would recommend is have a sizable force both upon your HQ and around the northern Bridge. In the beginning, an Md Tank, Tank and your Artillery should suffice. You might want to load up an APC and send it as well. Place the Md Tank just west of the Bridge. You can easily hold back the Blue Moon army there. Your other group (the one close to your HQ) should destroy all the Air units and then send a T-Copter to the Enemy's HQ after you've had your Rocket destroy the Ground forces. A pretty simple map.

Mission:Dogfights
Difficulty:Extremely Easy
Ideal CO:Nell
Enemy CO:Olaf

Strategy:Nell doesn't offer much help for this map. Then again, you don't really need it. Just wipe out the enemy forces with your Bombers. Take out Olaf's Missile unit first and the sailing will be easy.

Mission:Naval Forces
Difficulty:Easy
Ideal CO:Nell
Enemy CO:Olaf

Strategy:In this lesson you'll learn all about Cruisers, B-Ships, Subs and other Naval units. Nell will walk you through most of the mission. The rest is painfully easy to figure out. It's just a matter of mopping up Olaf's forces with your most powerful Units. No sweat, right?

Mission:Climate Status
Difficulty:Medium
Ideal CO:Nell
Enemy CO:Olaf

Strategy:This is probably one of the more difficult training missions. Here, you'll get to see Olaf's CO power first hand. And it is evil. Keep all your units close by as Olaf will unleash Blizzard at the beginning of his first turn. His units will be able to move normally in the snow. In addition his units have greater firepower. You'll want to wait out the snowstorm and then make your move.

Since you held back your first turn, many of his units will be stranded and easy pickings. Those B-Copters of his can be very annoying, so try and destroy them as quickly as possible. Just play defensively and let Olaf come to you. It might take a few days longer than usual, but your forces will easily overcome the obstacle before them. Keep your strongest units on the front lines. You should try and capture those two Neutral Cities to the east, but if it looks like there's too many units, just back off and wait patiently. Your Artillery and Rockets will eliminate most of the enemy. Just be as defensive as possible and choose your battles wisely.

Mission:Fog of War
Difficulty:Medium
Ideal CO:Nell
Enemy CO:Olaf

Strategy:This is the final combat-oriented Field Training mission. Here Nell introduces you to Fog of War. As she'll explain, Fog of War severely limits your view to what your units can see. Use terrain to your advantage for this battle.

Your first move should be to send your two Tank units to destroy the enemy Rockets that were hiding in the forest. Next, have your Rockets fire upon the enemy Md Tank. Send your own Md Tank to finish it off. On your next turn try and hide your Artillery and Rocket units in forest. It's a great cover and Olaf will never know what hit him! Really though the only real danger after you wipe out the Rocket and Md Tank is a little Artillery unit hiding in the forests just north Blue Moon HQ, and another Rocket just south. Instead of attacking the Lander that's hiding in the reef, just send an Infantry unit in to capture the HQ.

Mission:Special Intel
Difficulty:N/A
Ideal CO:Nell
Enemy CO:Olaf

Strategy:No strategy required here! Nell just gives you some more pointers that you'll need for the real combat that begins in the campaign mode. Enjoy!
