The Greening (Or Not) of the Wii Software Library

Panzer Dragoon Series

On one hand, the Wii is getting franchises that never showed up on the GameCube. On the other, there are still plenty of titles that would be perfect on Nintendo's latest console, yet aren't.

Panzer Dragoon Series

What is it?

The Panzer Dragoon series started as an on-rails shooter for the Sega Saturn, and had striking similarities to Nintendo's Star Fox series. The series eventually progressed into the RPG realm, but returned to its roots with Orta, an exclusive on the original Xbox.

The franchise is all about pure on-rails shooting, with no diversions whatsoever. Any Nintendo gamer out there familiar with Star Fox will immediately identify with the titles. Orta took the core Star Fox 64 formula and applied it to its own unique setting. Players are no longer in an Arwing (or a Landmaster), but on a dragon fighting off enemy combatants.

Though the games were never as layered as the two proper Star Fox entries, all the titles featured intense difficulty and a hardcore experience unrivaled by anything the Star Fox series has ever produced.

Why should a continuation of it come to Wii?

The Wii Remote and Nunchuk would do amazing things for the Panzer Dragoon series because players would be able to move the dragon around the screen to dodge enemy fire while aiming with the IR capabilities of the Wii Remote to dispense said enemies.

Smilebit, the Sega development team responsible for Orta, already has Wii experience as the developer of Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games. Providing Wii owners with either a port of Orta or a brand new Panzer Dragoon title should be easy enough for the team and having gone years without a proper Star Fox from Nintendo, this game would fill the void quite well.
