To its credit, it's the second-best game with "Brothers" and "Brawl" in the title ever made.

Beat-’em-up games are no strangers to Nintendo consoles. Classics like the Ninja Turtles and Final Fight series are widely praised for their fast-paced gameplay and addictive nature. After giving Brawl Brothers a shot on the Wii U Virtual Console and finding it to be pretty unfairly difficult, I see why this one tends to be forgotten.

The game is about as average as you can get. Move right, beat up some dudes; move right again, beat up even more dudes. There’s not a whole lot of skill involved, which becomes really apparent when you get to the point where you’re forced to take several hits from enemies. When a game is designed well, you can theoretically avoid taking damage if you’re skilled enough, but how slow your character moves up and down combined with the number of enemies that show up at once gives the game itself an unfair advantage.

There are five different playable characters: The ex-policeman Hack, his partner Slash, Lord J. the Judo teacher, Kazan the ninja, and Wendy the wrestler. Each of them have their own unique style of fighting, but all control and play exactly the same. The only real differences between them, other than the physical ones, are the special moves they possess. Unfortunately, these moves drain your life bar each time you use them, so I found myself not bothering with them at all.

There’s no save feature or passwords in this game, but thankfully the restore points on the Wii U come in handy and make completing an extremely difficult game a little less difficult. Either way, there are far better games in the genre worth playing instead. Skip this one.
