Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects

Fully-functional environments and cool powers highlight this new fighting game from EA.

For many years, whenever you thought of a Marvel fighting game, you thought of Marvel vs. Capcom, the classic 2D fighting series. No longer holding the license, however, more titles of this ilk are not likely to come out of Capcom. Seeking to bring back their classic characters to duke it out in an all-out brawl, Marvel has teamed up with Electronic Arts to create Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects.

Although story specifics are currently scant in detail, we do know that ten Marvel fighters will appear (of which Iron Man, Spider-Man, Elektra, Wolverine, and The Thing have been confirmed to be playable). But they won’t be alone. Just as they had to battle for their lives against the Capcom players in the old days, they’ll have to prove themselves yet again, this time against a brand new roster of fighters (8, to be exact), named the Imperfects, designed by EA. So far we’ve only been shown Johnny Ohm, an electric fellow not unlike The Shocker, and Brigade, a towering hulk of muscle. Both have very unique styles, so I’m eagerly anticipating discovering the remaining six.

One of the big draws of Rise of the Imperfects are the open-ended arenas, reminiscent of Capcom's Power Stone for the Dreamcast (though the levels in Imperfects do not move). You'll be free to explore and take advantage of fully interactive environments where you can really flex those mutated muscles.

Another great aspect is the simple control scheme. You'll have basic melee attacks and jumping maneuvers, but using your powers will be extremely simple. By pressing the power button, you can unleash a variety of specialized attacks, from Jonny Ohm's ranged lightning blasts to liberating Wolverine's claws from their internal sheathing. On the flipside, pressing the mobility button will help you to avoid your opponent's onslaught. Flying characters will be able to take to the sky, while ground-oriented fighters will be able to run faster.

During a fight, each player will fill their rage meter. Once full, you can (you guessed it) become enraged and you'll be able to inflict a lot more damage for a limited amount of time. It’s exciting features like these that could make Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects a great addition to your library come its release in October.
