Pokémon: Leaf Green & Fire Red

by Zosha Arushan - July 21, 2004, 9:22 pm EDT

Gotta catch all 386!

After the phenomenal success of Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, it was merely a matter of time until Nintendo announced another release of their insanely popular “catch the cute little monsters and make them fight to the death, er… till they faint” franchise.

The new edition of Pokémon is a remake of the original Pokémon with all of the original monsters and the original story. The game is running off of the Ruby/Sapphire engine and looks quite similar. Thanks to the advancements of Ruby and Sapphire, Pokémon Red Fire and Leaf Green will have a few new twists on the old favourite, such as two on two fighting, the contests, etc.

The biggest news is that Red Fire and Leaf Green will ship with a wireless linker, which allows up to five people to link up so that players won’t need to be tangled up in cords to get their battling on. In addition, Pokémon Gold and Silver monsters which were not available in Pokémon Colloseum will be catchable in the remakes. The legendary monsters from previous Game Boy and Game Boy Colour versions will also be obtainable depending on the cartridge.

Other additions include a new “Help” feature (for those of who are still confused with Pokémon’s system and customization possibilities), new locations not found in the original Game Boy titles, and a few minigames involving favourite Pokémon. Also, for those who were unable to find the Jirachi bonus disc, the patch for the Berry/Time bug will be available from those who purchase Fire Red or Leaf Green.

The “National Pokédex” will become available after beating Fire Red and Leaf Green, which players will be able to use to trade Pokémon from Ruby and Sapphire.

Pokémon Fire Red and Leaf Green will be available in North America in early September.
