Freaky Flyers

by Billy Berghammer - August 8, 2002, 3:29 pm EDT

Midway is taking adventure Kart racing to the air with Freaky Flyers! A new complete preview with details direct from the producers mouths!

At first glance you may think Freaky Flyers is a cheap rip off of Diddy Kong Racing’s flying levels. Well sort of. You’ll also want to add parts of Beetle Adventure Racing, Conker’s Bad Fur Day, and the humor from The Tick as well. Here’s what Midway Entertainment is brewing up…

Features:

  • Two Disc Game

  • Rated Teen

  • Thirteen characters, along with secret characters

  • Additional Platform specific secret characters

  • Over 50 total characters to race with easy-to-learn, hard-to-master aerial racing

  • branching adventure that takes the player through each characters storyline

  • Loads of aerial stunts

  • Competitive aerial dog fighting combat

  • Circuit Racing (ala’ Mario Kart) with 5 total circuits.

  • 35 levels and arenas

  • Over 1 ½ hours of FMV

  • Mini-games

  • Boss battles

  • DVD content including the behind-the-scenes making of Freaky Flyers

To put it lightly, there’s more to do than just race in Freaky Flyers. The tracks are extremely expansive and have hundreds of paths that you can take. Each level has goals and sub-goals to accomplish when you race through the tracks. To finish all the goals and unlock everything the game has to offer, you’ll have to race through the levels multiple times with different characters.

For Example, in Coyote Canyon, these are things you’ll have to do:

    1. Shoot and spin all mailbags

    2. Collect Horseshoes

    3. Shoot out at the OK Corral

    4. Shoot down opponents

    5. Free the Indians

    6. Save Damsel in distress

The game was shown on PS2 at the Midway Gamers Summit, but the buttons should map out just fine on the GameCube. Flying is pretty straight forward, and the game is very easy to pick up. There are advanced moves like dive bombing and quick turns, but anyone can quickly learn to play Freaky Flyers. One of the added bonuses is that with a tap of a button, you can whip around and shoot enemies in back of you. This is extremely helpful when you have a few bogeys on your back.

One thing you’ll immediately note is that Freaky Flyers is jam-packed with personality. Midway picked up Ben Edlund from The Tick to write each of the characters’ storylines. These storylines unfold in the gobs of FMV in the game. Each character’s story intertwines in the game, bringing the whole game together. What? A Kart game with a story? Yes, it’s true…but at least it’s funny and entertaining. Note that Freaky Flyers has a teen rating. There are loads of dry innuendos and funny jokes. It’s PG-13-style humor.

Environments are quirky, expansive, and very different. You’ll race in a multitude of environments, time periods, and fantasy locations including Tokyo, Chicago, a haunted forest, an old-west town, space, and even the human body. Yes, you’ll actually be dodging hair follicles and shooting down boogers while you race out of orifices of a human body. Midway also noted that you’ll be coming out of 4 different bodily orifices. Ewwwww.

Even though Freaky Flyers has a cartoon look to it, it’s a very good looking game. In single player mode, Midway promises a steady 60 frames per second in single player, and 30 frames for multiplayer.

This game is huge, and there are plenty of modes to get lost in. The meat of the game is the adventure mode, but you also have 5 circuit modes to choose from, as well as additional dogfight modes, which you can play alone or with friends. Unfortunately, only the Xbox version sports a 4-player split screen mode. GameCube only has a 2-player mode.

If you’re a fan of Kart Racing, be on the look out for Freaky Flyers this fall. Midway could possibly take adventure kart racing to the next level. With so much to do, and so much to unlock, you won’t be able to blaze through it all in a day.
