Crazy Taxi

Sega's Crazy Taxi for GameCube by way of Acclaim. Nintendophiles are in for the ride of their life!

Back at E3, we asked Acclaim if there would be improvements in the graphics for the GameCube version of Crazy Taxi. We were told that yeah, the visuals would be better. Word on the street is this is indeed the case, with visuals looking better on GameCube than on the Dreamcast. Otherwise, it is exactly the same game as previous versions. But for those who have yet to experience the game, it’s not to be missed. Veteran “Crazy Cabbies” may also be interested in the NGC version in order to use to comfortable controller to smash up the streets. Crazy Taxi was released alongside the GameCube and is available now. Look for impressions and reviews on PGC in the near future.

Oh, and if ya hadn’t heard… There’s going to be a Crazy Taxi movie. CRAZY!

“Hey hey heyyyyy! Come on over, have some fun! Let's play some KUH-RA-ZY TAXI! Here we goooo!”

Those four famous lines are spoken by the whacked-out, grizzly voice that urges you on (besides the passenger) in Sega's smash hit Crazy Taxi. This gem of a title, developed by the aptly named Hitmaker (also responsible for the Virtua Cop series) puts you in the driver's seat of a taxi cab where it is your job to get your passenger to their destination as fast as possible, within the designated time limit, no matter what the cost.

To this end, you can speed thru the rather large city, taking customers to and fro. The hook of the game is that even though you are driving at top speeds, frequently colliding into other cars or flying through the air after hitting a ramp neither your taxi or customer take any damage. You can even drive under water! This often leads to some pretty hilarious results and fantastic off the wall gameplay. Even better, the more you play the better you get to know the level, the more shortcuts around the city you’ll discover adding lots of replay to the fun. Just be sure to get your customers to where they want to go FAST—or they’ll give you quite the earful.

The game even has a handful of punk tunes from the bands Bad Religion and Offspring, which despite being somewhat repetitive, fit the game quite well.

Critically acclaimed in the arcades, and praised as gold when the better-than-arcade version hit the Dreamcast, the home version of Crazy Taxi featured even more fun stuff to do than the arcade version. Added extras such as the Crazy Box mini-games (including Crazy Bowling) and a brand new city to trash greatly extended the life of the game.

Now Acclaim is bringing this game to the Gamecube. Even though this may be just be a straight port of the Dreamcast classic, it would be a more than welcome addition to the GC lineup, especially as it looks like it will appear at launch, or shortly thereafter.

Many Nintendophiles have never taken a ride in a Crazy Taxi before & they’re in for a real treat!
