Memory Card 59

by Jonathan Metts - August 23, 2001, 3:28 am EDT

A new price for the card has been announced at Spaceworld.

According to one of the Spaceworld press release forms, the official price for the GameCube Digicard will be $14.99 USD. With Luigi's Mansion supposedly only taking up 3 of the 59 blocks, GameCube fans should be just fine when it comes to memory and money.

The GameCube Digicards are destined to be the primary method of saving game data and transporting it around, but we still know almost nothing about the technology. What we do know is almost unsettling: each card holds only half a megabyte of information (that's twice as much as an N64 Controller Pak, but still only 1/16th as much as a PS2 memory card), and there are only two Digicard slots on the GameCube itself. Many people looked at the two slots and were immediately dismayed...four controller ports, but only room for two memory cards? Well, as uncool as it might sound, switching cards out isn't really a very big deal, and the design probably saved Nintendo some major $$$ in manufacturing costs. Likewise, the small storage capacity probably won't be an issue either. For all we know, the cards might have built-in compression or something. The small size should also translate to small prices...as opposed to Sony's pocket-gouging $35 for a PS2 memory card. We may see Digicards retailing for as little as ten bucks, which will be welcome news to parents when they realize that you pretty much HAVE to have a memory card to play anything. Heck, if we're really lucky, we might even see Nintendo bundle a card in with the system.
