Spongebob Squarepants: SuperSponge

by Max Lake - March 14, 2001, 5:28 pm EST

Along with the Rugrats, THQ will be bringing Nickolodeon's crazy cartoon critter, SpongeBob SquarePants to life in a new Game Boy Advance game. Get ready to go jelly fishing!

Want more evidence that THQ has latched onto a white-hot property with SpongeBob? I just saw a commercial for "SpongeBob Cheese Nips." With Nabisco (I think that's who who make Cheese Nips, right?) cashing in on SpongeBob, it's a very good chance GBA might see a few SpongeBob games. I'm actually getting excited to see the game, it's a cool show! (I feel so silly for ever dissing it...)

As suspected, it seems that the SpongeBob GBC is to be one of many games featuring the quirky undersea trouble maker. Citing the show's popularity, THQ have gone on record to indicate the GBC game is only its first outing with SpongeBob:

"SpongeBob SquarePants is currently the #2 property on all Kids TV with more than 28 million viewers each month," stated Peter Dille, THQ vice president of marketing. "We couldn't have chosen a better time to introduce the first of our interactive SpongeBob SquarePants adventures."

So, we can expect something all new & completely different for the GBA game. Since the Game Boy Advance will be backward compatible, SpongeBob fans will have two games featuring the yellow-fellow for the new handheld. Considering the high volume of Rugrats games THQ has produced (its other uber-popular Nickleodeon franchise) it's possible the SB-fun won't stop there.

In the just released "SpongeBob SquarePants: Legend of the Lost Spatula," players travel through Bikini Bottom as the bubbly, offbeat SpongeBob, on a quest to become the greatest fry cook of all time. SpongeBob must find hidden clues, unlock secret levels, feed hungry ghosts, and avoid jellyfish as he searches for the Frying Dutchman's Golden Spatula, the key to fry cook success. SpongeBob is joined by Sandy Cheeks, Squidward, Mr. Krabs, and his very best friend Patrick Star in this underwater Game Boy Color adventure.

No details have been released on THQ's GBA SpongeBob game as of yet.

SpongeBob Square Pants: Legend of the Lost Spatula was released yesterday for the Game Boy Color. Although the GBA version of the game might be an updated port of this title, it is more likely the GBA SpongeBob will be a whole new game altogether. If THQ's Rugrats games have shown us anything, it's that THQ is usually more prone to make new games to get as much mileage out of its licenses as possible. SpongeBob fans with GBCs might wanna check this out though!

SpongeBob SquarePants is the name of an odd lil’ Nickelodeon cartoon airing on Sunday mornings. THQ have licensed the property to develop into a video game for Game Boy Advance. SpongeBob is actually one of many Nick-toon based games THQ is working on; Rugrats and Rocket Power games are underway too.

You may not have heard of SpongeBob or know much about him. Personally, when I heard about this game I thought, “What the hell is a SpongeBob? What kind of game would they make about his SquarePants?” Being silly, I shared this sentiment with Planet readers. Many of which quickly responded to set me straight: SpongeBob is one wacky cartoon that definitely merits watching. Once you do watch it (it’s amusing enough to make an effort to see it) you’ll realize that it will almost certainly make an amusing game too.

The show is set in the depths of the Pacific Ocean, in a undersea city called Bikini Bottom. SpongeBob is a square yellow sea sponge (hence the square pants) and lives in a pineapple with his pet snail Gary. SpongeBob works as a short order cook at a restaurant called the Krusty Krab and enjoys “jelly fishing” (fishing for jelly fish with a small net). The cast is rounded out by colorful characters, which include Spongebob’s neighbor, the irritable Squidward; Patrick the gentle starfish and the adventurous Sandy Cheeks, who is a squirrel (in diving gear, no less). As basic as the premise seems, things always get goofy when SpongeBob is around!

We’re not sure what adventures THQ has in store for SpongeBob on Gameboy Advance yet. You can expect the game to have a humorous touch and (we suspect) jelly fishing somewhere in the game. Until new info surfaces from the briny blue, the Planet staff will be killing time by jelly fishing.
