It's a whole new world, filled with Disney's classics.

It has been a while since we have seen an original Disney game that includes many of the company's assets in one title. The upcoming Disney Universe hopes to change that when it releases later in the month. Disney Universe is an adventure/platforming title where players take control of colorful characters and don different outfits based on famous Disney characters. Gameplay is reminiscent of other family-friendly classics like the LEGO franchise as well as Sony's LittleBigPlanet due to its emphasis on team play and cooperation in order to overcome challenges.

The story behind Disney Universe is the invasion of various Disney worlds by dark enemies. The goal is to visit the worlds and overcome their challenges in order to claim them back from the enemy. The story so far seems to be pretty light, with Disney Universe being more about the gameplay rather than a lavish plot akin to Square Enix's Kingdom Hearts series.

Both the worlds and the characters will be based on classic and modern Disney and Pixar films, both live-action and animated. The worlds confirmed so far include the Wall-E world, the Alice in Wonderland world (based on last year's Tim Burton film), the Lion King world, the Pirates of the Caribbean world and many more. These worlds will hold several challenges and mini-games such as puzzles that can be completed with up to three other players, either competitively or cooperatively. The worlds will also feature locales based on some of the events seen in the original films, such as the Cave of Wonders in the Aladdin world. The final game will include 6 worlds.

When Disney Universe was first announced, it was believed that players would be in control of various Disney characters. In reality, you will play as colorful original characters that can be customized based on the player's preferences. They will be able to don several outfits based on famous Disney characters, such as Pumbaa from the Lion King, Sulley from Monster's Inc., Wall-E and TRON (based on last year's re-imagining/sequel to the 1982 film). In total there will be 40 unlockable outfits to choose from, including costumes based on Mickey Mouse and friends, The Jungle Book and last year's Tangled.

The combination of modern and classic Disney assets and the focus on co-operative gameplay makes Disney Universe one that should please Disney fans of all ages. The game will be released on October 25, 2011 for the Wii.

I've had my eye on this one for awhile. I hope it turns out as fun as it sounds.

Interesting that this is releasing so close to Skylanders. They sound similar-ish. Also, Toy Story writers are behind Skylanders so there's a weird, meta-competition vibe going on.

This is the first I've ever heard of this game, but after checking out some videos of it in action, I'm actually rather intrigued by it...

Being a big Disney fan that I am, this seems really fun. And the concept seems great. I prefer gaming on Wii than to PS3, but there is so much more possibility for expansion and I just don't think Wii will get DLC, if the other games provide it. If it dosen't have it on those either, then I will go for the Wii version.
