Factor 5's newest Star Wars game is packing tons of new gameplay features, including two-player cooperative missions.

Today, the June issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly is expected to arrive in the hands of a few lucky subscribers. We'll have more info on the issue's top story, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike, later on. However, EGM's online partner, Gamers.com, has posted the first info and screens already.

Stop reading and click the link above to see their exclusive info and screens.

Done? Good, then let's get into the details. Two major new gameplay features are prevalent in the screenshots. First, there is a two-player mode. Info from Gamers.com suggests that it is a cooperative mode that allows you to play through the missions in Rogue Leader, the previous Star Wars game from Factor 5. It is unknown whether the new missions will also be enabled for multiple players.

It's also quite evident that players can now climb out of their vehicles and perform tasks on foot. Factor 5 tinkered with third-person gameplay in Rogue Leader, by allowing you to control your pilot in the hangar when choosing a ship for each mission. Details are of course scarce at the moment, but it seems you can now exit your craft at any time during planetary missions, and presumably you can run over to another vehicle as well as fight with blaster and/or lightsaber on foot. One screen even depicts Luke Skywalker climbing up to the underbelly of a giant AT-AT walker to cut out its insides, just like in the movies.

There are also new vehicles to pilot, including a speeder bike for a mission on what appears to be the forest moon of Endor, as well as an AT-ST walker in the same environment. Obviously, some Imperial vehicles will finally be at our disposal. Other screens show a Rebel fighter riding a Taun Taun on Hoth and Chewbacca fighting Stormtroopers inside a ship, but those screens appear to be taken from cinema scenes, judging by their lack of on-screen displays for health, weapons, etc.

Graphically, Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike looks to be properly upgraded from its predecessor, although a few areas are still obviously unfinished. One screenshot shows an X-Wing flying into a horde of Imperial craft; there are at least fifty (we counted) TIE Fighters, Interceptors, Bombers, and Gunboats on-screen at once.

We'll have more information on this game as soon as it becomes available, and of course, more impressions than are probably necessary once E3 begins next month.

O_o Co-op Multiplayer!

I could kiss you Factor 5! God this game has leaped up onto my most wanted list.

rpgloverApril 22, 2003

the game looks great and has 2 player
not only that- it has 3rd person playing- i cant wait now

kennyb27April 22, 2003

Another $50 to promise to another game...Oh well, I'm not complaining, it will definitely worth it. I have one doubt:

Doing this in the game was very unimpressive and at many times hindersome. I know this won't be the final build, but here's to hoping they scrapped the old 3rd person gameplay engine and went with a newer, friendlier system.

GamefreakApril 22, 2003

of course the did...
the only reason you could move your player around was to impress you with the detail in the ships and hangars....with the old select method it had a fixed camera view.

Wouldn't it be cool to engage in mechwars with AT-ST's in your own stolen one?...and now you can, judging from the screens...although I don't like the cockpit of the AT-ST too much...

Jonathan, how could you not be completely wowed by the graphics? Sure, some of them aren't a huge leap ahead of RL (I assume most of this is still an earlier build), but look at that shot with Luke on the Speeder Bike! Jesus- those have got to be the best textures I've ever seen in a videogame.

DjunknownApril 22, 2003

Yay! Looks like we'll get some more star wars lovin'.

All I ask is to make it so you can select the difficulty. Rogue Leader was my 1st GC game but it I could never legally beat that 6th mission!!! Finally, I had to stoop low and....cheat.

I remember from an earlier post that fans wanted a fresh adventure (Star Wars Galaxies, or some material on the expanded universe from the novels pops into my mind.). From the looks of things, we're not getting it. It looks nice, but do I HAVE to take down those AT-AT walkers again???

A very promising game and a system seller for sure.

I agree with jonathan. the graphics are good, but rogue leader seems to be better at this point. i dont think many should be wowed right now because this isnt probably what the final version of th game will look like. i hope they dont screw this game up with the third person perspective. i hope they will make it fun and challenging and not just a gimmick of being able to go outside ur ship. im still looking forward to this game though. face-icon-small-smile.gif

Rogue Leader was my 1st GC game

yeah same here face-icon-small-smile.gif

i could make it to the last mission though, couldn't beat that for the life of me though. i loved that game, but eventually it got boring and got traded. this one looks like it will have a lot more replayability. As long as they make the 3rd-person levels better than the ones in Clone Wars i'll be happy face-icon-small-smile.gif (btw i just rented clone wars this weekend and loved it, anyone else like that game?)
this game sorta came outta nowhere with this info, i'm so excited now face-icon-small-smile.gif kudos, factor 5!

Grey NinjaApril 22, 2003

Those screenshots are totally awesome. I can't wait to play this game now.

GiolonApril 22, 2003

Meh, they don't really impress me much. In fact I think I was more excited before I saw them. I was hoping for the game to be set in the NJO. Frankly, I'm tired of roping AT-ATs on Hoth and blowing up Death Stars. I want to start fighting some Coralskippers and Cruiser Analogs. I want to see some dovin basal shielding action. The "Classic" era is way overplayed.

GamefreakApril 22, 2003

Lol sorry, but I'm pretty sure rogue squadron will stay in the "episode iv and above" category...

KulockApril 22, 2003

I think the graphics already look better, especially for the amount of tightening they probably had to do for so many different Ties and so forth in that shot... And you know Factor 5's going to want to keep up an excellent framerate and the graphical quality when you play the 2 Player co-op missions... (How much of Rogue Leader's going to be included, anyway? Modified 2-player versions of the original missions? The original missions as well?)

All in all, I'm impressed so far, this really looks like one to watch for, especially since Factor 5's going to get even more polish time on it than they had for Rogue Leader.

GoldShadow1April 22, 2003

Eh? That's it?

MeierApril 22, 2003

Wait till you see the EGM pics. Having scanned over the digital version of it from Zunio.com, the Gamers.com pics just dont do it justice. It looks flatout f'ing amazing.

StRaNgEApril 22, 2003

i had my fill of star wars till i saw those shots, screen shots normally look like crap to me and if they look even half decent on the web they look way better in person.

i now want this game....

It's true, the screens in EGM look much better than the ones at Gamers.com. But we can't post those because they're copyrighted material. I think Gamers.com got the leftovers.

bonestormerApril 23, 2003

Wow.... there could be a ton of sweet Star Wars games coming out soon (assuming they all live up to their promise, as they should). And not just shooters either!

1) SW Galaxies
2) SW Knights of the Old Republic
3) RS3: Rebel Strike

Sweeet...

reyontoyenyApril 23, 2003

I am looking forward to this game. Like many GC owners, Rogue Leader was my first GC game. The description of the coop. multiplayer mode scared me for a moment, and I hope there isn't too much redundancy from Rogue Leader in Rebel Strike. I'll keep my eye on this game. I really thought the Vader secret levels were cool, and I hope they'll have more Imperial secret missions. If they're going to have multiplayer, I hope they'll have a versus mode also. While being able to use a blaster and light saber outside of the ship is great, I hope they won't put too much emphasis on it.

By the way, the Cloud Car kicked ass in RL, it better be back.

GamefreakApril 23, 2003

Is the EGM in stores yet? I neeeeeeed it.....
