The SNES masterpiece has been completed in less than two hours.

According to Twin Galaxies, the world record officiating organization for gaming, someone has beaten The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past in under two hours. Michael Damiani blazed through the rather lengthy adventure in just 1:57.15 on April 9, 2003. The previous record was 2:07.10, and some Zelda experts thought it was impossible to break the two-hour mark.

Under Twin Galaxies rules, the clock starts ticking as soon as you press start on the title screen. You must start a new file and beat the game without dying (fairy revivals are allowed). The clock stops when the final silver arrow is dealt to Ganon. Glitches that allow you to skip portions of the game are prohibited. Here is Damiani's timeline, just to put things in perspective:

0:03.20 - reaches Zelda

0:06.57 - exits Hyrule Castle

0:12:24 - obtains Pendant of Courage

0:20.55 - obtains Pendant of Power

0:27.36 - obtains Pendant of Wisdom

0:29.14 - uses Pendants to obtain Master Sword

0:35.44 - appears on top of Golden Pyramid

0:46.57 - obtains 1st Maiden Gem

1:00.09 - obtains 2nd Maiden Gem

1:08.00 - obtains 3rd Maiden Gem

1:16.07 - obtains 4th Maiden Gem

1:25.08 - obtains 5th Maiden Gem

1:32.40 - obtains 6th Maiden Gem

1:34.35 - purchases "Big Bomb"

1:45.28 - obtains 7th and final Maiden Gem

1:47.04 - sets foot into Ganon's Castle

1:57.15 - delivers final blow via Silver Arrow to Ganon

Along with this remarkable achievement, Damiani also holds the world record time for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, with 6:45.17. He eventually wants to hold the records for the entire Zelda series.

The cool thing is, that I kinda know the guy who broke the record. He was a regular at a message board I used to visit. He also had a record for MGS2 (don't know if he still does). This is pretty cool news.

"Sky"April 16, 2003

I currently go to a message board where he posts.

This guy is quite a gamer...

I'll never even try something like this though, not my style to rush through games where the emphasis isn't on time constraints.

Michael "TYP" says: That number would be misleading, Jonny. Sailing in The Wind Waker eats up more time than running about in earlier games. Therefore, beating it could take longer than in the other games, but that doesn't make WW a longer game in terms of dungeon/mission complexity.

That's really no different than the main overworlds on any of the other Zelda's though... It might take long in the begining, before you can warp, but I don't think it would be all that much different.

Grey NinjaApril 16, 2003

Jesus.... that is very fast. I want to try my luck at beating a few of those times at some point.

GaimeGuyApril 16, 2003

...

I'm speechless.

KimchiApril 16, 2003

Damn.. That really is fscking fast! I just tried speeding through LttP right now... and gave up when I appeared on top of the pyramid in the dark world at the one hour mark, compared to this guy's 35 minute mark.

HuddlebumApril 16, 2003

I wonder if it was SNES version or GBA. Probably SNES. I should buy it sometime. My local trade in shop has it for $5, but I have the GBA version for now.

edgeblade69April 16, 2003

Well I tried it...I did it 2 hours and 2 minutes...sigh, so close...but I had forgotten to get the ice rod for the dark world lvl 7 boss and I didn't have enough money to get the flippers when I wanted to, so both of those cost me some time. I think I could definitely do it though. Consolation prize; I beat the old record, heh.

I forget, does it give you the completition time at the end, or do you have to figure it out with a stopwatch?

Oo errr, I'd also like to know which items he got or skipped, and did he do the dark world dungeons in 1-2-3-4-5-6-7 order?

No you don't get a completion time, you gotta time it yourself. I just looked at the time when I hit start, then looked at it again when I killed Ganon.

damn this guy is hardcore

RiZeUpApril 18, 2003

PFFF!
I know someone that can finish Zelda in 1 hour 15 minutes.

KulockApril 22, 2003

Without breaking the rules about not skipping areas via glitches?

RiZeUpApril 23, 2003

He can do it with his hands tied in his back and without exploiting any bugs.

GaimeGuyApril 26, 2003

Why don't I believe the two of you who claim the times of 2:02 and 1:15? face-icon-small-tongue.gif

Locke ColeApril 27, 2003

Beacause their just jealous and lieing, I hope to eventually hold the time for the fastest compleation of some game. I don't know which game though, hopefully at least a Zelda game.

KulockApril 28, 2003

Try for one of the CDi ones. No one would ever dare challenge you on it. ;D
