GameCube is Top Selling Console in the UK

Thanks to some price-cuts, the GameCube is now number one!

Due to the recent price cuts by some UK retailers (such as Argos and Dixon) and the launch of Metroid Prime, the GameCube was the number one selling console this past week in the UK. It sold 14,000 units (an increase of 60% over last week), beating out both Xbox and PlayStation 2 sales.

Nintendo is hoping that the launch of the Game Boy Advance SP, which includes a €50 coupon towards the purchase of a GameCube, will help keep GameCube sales high. The GBA SP launches on Friday with 400,000 units and is being backed by a €30 million advertising campaign.

The downside comes with the fact that these price-cuts are only temporary. For instance, Argos's deal ends on April 1st. Nintendo will have to take the responsibility of keeping GameCube sales high after that. This task might prove difficult, considering that the next big title, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, won't be available until May 3rd.

30 million euros on advertising?...like...whoa. If they spent that much on GCN, which is struggling, instead of GBA, which is sure to sell like mad...well you know.
