It was Xbox week in Japan. No one should be surprised that Temco’s Dead or Alive 3 took top honors this week, the week of the Xbox launch. It outsold other top selling Xbox titles by more than four to one, pretty much single-handedly selling the system. We’ll see how the future plays out for the Xbox in Japan.

Arguably more exciting, however, was the release of Doubutsu Banchou (a.k.a. Animal Leader) for the Nintendo GameCube, which came out February 21 and currently holds the Number Two slot. In its first week in stores, Doubutsu Banchou sold nearly 50,000 copies, very nearly outselling Genma Onimusha, Jet Set Radio Future and Project Gotham combined. We’ll see how it fares next week.

Also, Animal Forest Plus continues to remain in the Top Ten despite moving about quite a bit. It joins Animal Leader as one of the only two Nintendo branded titles in the Top Ten. Overall, Nintendo system software accounted for one third of the 30 top selling titles this week.
