Another PGC E3 Video Update!

by Max Lake - May 30, 2001, 1:15 pm EDT

What's going on with the video? Who's making it? Will it be ready soon? We answer these questions and make a small call for help!

Billy asked me to do an “E3 Video Update” and one is certainly needed! Many people are asking us what’s up and as potential customers, you have a right to know!

Lately, I’ve been putting a lot of time into the E3 video, as we want to get it produced and into your eager little hands as quickly as possible. In fact, trying to get the video coordinated has actually prevented me from getting caught up with PGC E3 content to some degree… (I have pre-show thoughts I wrote in a notebook that I have yet to transcribe!) Luckily, PGC’s staff is mighty & massive, so there shouldn’t be too much of a slow down for content. (If there is, “ IT’S FIRING TIME!”)

We have lots and lots of great footage. Interviews, game footage, show floor, some babes (what few there were…) and, it turns out that we were one of the few media outlets who scored video footage of Sega’s upcoming games. The video will be so jam packed that it’s good we’re offering two packages. I expect quite a bit of spill over (making each package a bit more unique –we’ll see).

Our first choice for professional editing equipment fell through so I scrambled for a backup. One of my filmmaking friends, Kevin Hamilton, (proud papa of obscure humor site, Bad After Taste) was going to assist with the editing on pro equipment until we found out that it (the equipment) is unavailable at this time. While Kevin will still be assisting with the project, I’ve had to turn to another filmaking friend, Rob Avery — and I’m glad I did.

Rob is insane and a “professional” B-Movie maker. He’s sort of a local legend that I heard about while working on a flick of my own a couple years back and after I met him, we quickly became friends (we’ve got the same sick humor). Rob has tons of editing experience and good equipment to get the job done. You can learn more about his previous endeavors at his website, World Parody. (Viewer discretion is advised for his movie clips!)

Rob should already working on editing the Nintendo Press Conference as I write this. However, we have hit one small snag… And this is one thing that PGC readers knowledgeable in video equipment may be able to help us out with…

Our small setback is that some of our video footage (including interviews with Beth and Denis Dyack) was filmed on Rick Powers’ camera at a different speed. I filmed my stuff on a Sony DCR-TRV110, whereas Rick Powers filmed his on a Sony DCR-TRV230. I filmed all my stuff in SP, where Rick filmed some stuff in LP. Therefore, it plays all sped up on my camera. Neither Rob or I are sure what to do (short of sending it back to Rick and having him re-dub it) but we know there is an easy solution just under our noses.

Therefore, anyone with suggestions or knowledge about how to fix this problem easy (like, there may be some option on my DCR-TRV110 I’m overlooking) please get in touch. The sooner we get this resolved, the sooner we get things produced! (And we’ll all sleep easier too!)

Rick also just got in touch and let me know that he “found” (more like his wife did) two tapes he forgot to send. The tapes are of the Miyamoto interview and the keynote, and Rick is backing them up on S-VHS just in case we can’t solve the “speed” incompatibility problem before they hit my mailbox.

Billy has milked his direct feed footage and press kits for what they’re worth (notice the influx of screens on PGC lately?) and is sending them out to Mike Hrusecky, who is overseeing production of the CDs. Hopefully, Mike will be getting these soon. It’s possible the CDs will have more game footage overall.

Colin made us a swell banner ad based on the adventures of

HREF="http://www.seanbaby.com/nes/mark.htm">Mark “Mario” Discordia, though Billy feels the reference may be too obscure (to which we say “BOO!”). Still, a variation of this ad will probably be going out over the Cloudchaser Network soon to help further promote our endeavors.

Speaking of Cloudchaser, some people have asked if their video project is the same as ours or if they ripped us off or whatever. Well, to answer your questions, they are separate projects and with the Internet as rough as it is, it’s no wonder our CC amigos are doing something similar. We are even collaborating a bit, as we’re providing them with full footage of the Sega event I taped (though the PGC video will have an abbreviated version, mainly game footage and my brief encounters with Naka-san and Nagoshi-san) and CC is hooking us up with some extra direct feed of Nintendo & Sega games. Cooperation hasn’t been this sweet since Sesame Street!

So when can we see the video? We're still not sure but hoping we'll be moving from editing to duplicating within a couple weeks from now. Talking to Rob, it seems that editing will be pretty straightforward once we get everything together. We’re having to use my audio for the pre-show press conference in combination with Rick’s footage (as Rick and Zosha yapped the entire time they filmed, funny, but I’d kill them if my audio weren’t golden!) but the rest of it should go quickly — we hope. Here again, I’m devoting a lot of time and resources to the video, and wanna make it worth every single cent. It will be.

Oh, one other thing – the games industry must be super-broke because there wasn’t a lot of E3 swag to be had this year. We’ll do what we can to do something nice for the people who pre-ordered but there isn't as much to be had as we were expecting.

As we get close to finishing up editing, we will begin taking full orders and accept other methods of payment.

So, wish us luck, be patient and stay tuned! PGC’s E3 video will blow you away!
