Ex Square employee Hiroki Kikuta of Secret of Mana fame talks about the future with Consoles France.

Check it, a new interview on Consoles France with Hiroki Kikuta, one of the people who helped make Secret of Mana and other Square classics back in the days of yore so special. To be honest, I was a bit shocked by the optimism about Nintendo coming from a Japanese developer but maybe things aren't as dire there on the designer side as people have come to believe. Among the pretty juicy comments here's a whopper (I'll make you go there yourself for some old fashioned PS2 whomping):

Consoles-France : The video-game market in Japan is very depressed these days. You seems to be very interrested in GameCube. Do you think the GameCube has the potential to revive the market and become the new Super NES ?

Hiroki Kikuta: About GameCube... If the Nintendo contribute a well made develop kit to third party in low price really, GameCube will become a next SuperFamicom definitely. It has a comfortable potential with no doubt.

Intriguing to say the least... and calling it possibly on par with the Super Famicom in Japan is nothing to sneeze at, one can only hope. It may not be the high profile kind of stuff we've been wishing for but always interesting to hear a developer's perspective, especially from someone this frank and from Japan to boot. Enjoy!
