From Something Awful.com comes this disturbing “Awful Link of the Day.” I ask readers to keep this in mind as I share this piece from the Bizarro World… I guess somebody put up a website that asks the question “The First Transexual Video Game Character?” As freakish as the question sounds, it centers around the beloved Mario Brother icon, Birdo.

I guess in the old Mario 2 instruction book, Birdo is described as: "He thinks he is a girl and he spits eggs from his mouth. He'd rather be called 'Birdetta.'" Evidently, the latter part was omitted (in the US version?) causing for some weirdness as Birdo later is a girl in Mario Tennis. The site gets into it to almost a disturbing level of evidence; just enough to make you say “huh” and maybe freak you out. One of the things cited is the fact that Yoshi & Birdo are depicted as a romantic couple in the Mario Tennis instruction manual. I don’t know though, I remember Shiggy or Ask Dan or somebody saying “Yoshi has no gender” when people asked how Mario’s (seemingly boy) pet dino dino laid eggs.

I figured the boy wanting to be a girl thing may have been a Japanese-characterization thingy. After all, there are all kinds of perverted characters in anime. I asked “S-U-P-E-R” Ty what he thought; he replied “maybe people didn't notice things like that in da 80s.” How true. Well, now someone has made an unnerving website all about it. I guess my overall opinion is GET A LIFE PEOPLE! THEY ARE VIDEO GAME CHARACTERS!!!!! Maybe I shouldn’t have posted this….
