The Pokémon Company brings their free-to-start puzzler to mobile

The Pokémon Company's latest app for mobile has been announced, and it's a port of an existing 3DS title.

Pokémon Shuffle will come to iOS and Android later this year according to a trailer posted below, with Japan getting first access this summer. The game appears to be identical to the existing 3DS title, with the Pokémon at the top of the phone screen and the playfield on the bottom half.

The title is being published by Pokémon Company International, and is not a result of the previously announced alliance between Nintendo and DeNA.

The slow, grinding gears of inevitability.

I'm curious as to how this will perform. Pokemon Shuffle is a lighter, simpler version of Puzzle & Dragon and other freemium match-three-puzzle-RPGs. Pokemon Shuffle (as I understand it on the 3DS version) doesn't have all of the hooks that other freemium mobile games do.

Doesn't this mark the first time since the CD-i that Nintendo has allowed their games to officially be on a non-Nintendo-owned console/OS?

If you want to cut it funny, you can separate this from Nintendo and say this is The Pokemon Company putting the game out on iOS and Android. The Pokemon Company has put out other games on iOS before. But we are not silly here at NWR, so this is the first time in a long time that a (heavily affiliated) Nintendo game is getting a port to a non-Nintendo platform.

Nope. They also released Pokedex 3D on iOS (in 2012) and Pokemon TCG Online on PC and iOS (in 2014). They also released a Pokemon themed email app called Pokemate on Japanese cellphones in 2006. And a few PC titles.

Wait, so you're saying that gambling-inspired **** is now being ported to a platform that's capable of nothing better than gambling-inspired ****? Mind=blown.
