Following the release of their financial results, Nintendo held a briefing last night (this morning in Japan) going over the results, and some interesting figures were released.
There was some question as to how Amiibo affected the bottom line, and it clearly had an impact as Nintendo sold 10.5m Amiibo worldwide between their launch in November and the end of the fiscal year in March. The sales break down as 66% for the US and Canada, 20% for Europe, 11% for Japan and 3% for Australia.
In discussing their mobile plans, it was confirmed that Nintendo is planning to release five mobile titles over the next two fiscal years (now until March of 2017). Although this may seem small, Nintendo is aiming to ensure that they have the right play experiences and characters to keep the games hits for long periods of time in a fashion similar to their evergreen Wii U and 3DS games. To that end, Mario Kart producer Hideki Konno has been tasked with heading up the mobile initiative according to the Japanese news source Sankei.
Download sales have grown significantly for Nintendo as well, as the 10.2bn yen in digital sales recorded in the financial results was just for the January to March time. For the year, Nintendo recorded total digital sales (games + DLC) of 31.3 billion yen or US$260m at current market rates. This is up over 30% since last year..
