Sega is bringing a slew of Sega Genesis classics to the Nintendo 3DS later this Summer.

Sega will continue it’s line of 3D Classics this Summer with three Sega Genesis favorites, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Streets of Rage 2, and Gunstar Heroes.

In addition to stereoscopic graphics, Sega promises each of the games will include new modes and features. In the first wave of 3D Classics, new features included the ability to spin dash in the original Sonic the Hedgehog and a Super Dolphin Mode in Ecco the Dolphin.

The release line-up for SEGA 3D Classics in North America and Europe currently stands as:

  • 3D Fantasy Zone II (April 16)
  • 3D Thunder Blade (May 14)
  • 3D Streets of Rage 2 (July)
  • 3D Gunstar Heroes (August)
  • 3D Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (September)

The games will retail for $5.99 on the eShop.

Talkback

this is a batch of games that while not as impressive for their 3D Effect, are just an impressive selection of titles. <3 of course, stuff like Sonic 2 has to compete with the amazing ports done by Stealth and Taxman of the Sonic Retro forums, but I'm really interested in how they handle Gunstar Heroes and Streets of Rage 2 in particular... especially since Streets of Rage 2 is a game I feel is best played with a good sound system.

It saddens me that the only time SEGA ever remakes something these days, it's some less-than-stellar Genesis or Arcade game. C'mon, SEGA, do something with your Dreamcast-era IP! Hell, I'll even take 3D Classics Panzer Dragoon!

It's a lot easier to remake a Genesis game than one for the Dreamcast or Saturn. I'd love a new Skies of Arcadia remake, since I never got the chance to play that, but it's undoubtedly a far, far larger project to tackle than emulating Sonic 2 again.
