Aonuma Discusses Timeline: Hyrule Wariors

So if it’s a Dynasty Warriors game it takes place in historical China, right?

Now that we know the release date for Hyrule Warriors, September 26, there is only one date surrounding this title that remains a mystery; its place on the Legend of Zelda Timeline.

Rather than viewing Hyrule Warriors as canon and having a place on the timeline, series Producer Eiji Aonuma sees this game as a “separate dimension.” He likens it to the role the Avengers stories play in the lives of the characters in the Marvel universe -- a joining together of characters that each have their own personal timeline. Aonuma acknowledged that there could be a spot in the timeline but he would prefer to leave it out.

“The universe of Hyrule Warriors really is sort of a different universe and it is connected to the timeline of the Zelda series, but it is connected to several different games throughout the series”, said Aonuma. We really don't want to put it in the timeline because it has links to the different parts of the timeline.”

These comments place Hyrule Warriors in a group with the three Philips CD-i Zelda Titles and Link’s Crossbow Training as the only titles related to the series to not have a place on the official timeline.

The Avengers analogy is flawed because in the Marvel universe, all of the character exist in the same canon timeline (including the Avengers group itself).

I think most of the Warriors games take place in "crossover zone" where all coherence is lost and things only happen because of the rule of fan service. Especially in series like Orochi or Gundam which try to have storylines but there's no way these characters from completely different times (and possibly timelines) could ever meet each other so they make up some weird time rift stuff or whatnot to combine characters from the 3rd century (Dynasty Warriors) with, say, Ninja Gaiden which obviously takes place in the modern day.

Why?

This game takes place after a split in the timeline where Navi is unable to wake Link up at the beginning of Ocarina of Time which delays the events of that game by a couple days.
