Zelda Producer Hints We Didn't See Link in Zelda Trailer

Well, if that wasn't him, then who was it?

Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma hinted about a possible twist in today's Zelda Wii U trailer.

When asked why Link wasn't wearing his iconic green tunic in the battle scene seen today in the trailer, Aonuma simply replied to VentureBeat, “No one explicitly said that that was Link.”

Is it possible that Link won't make an appearance in this game? Or perhaps we just haven't seen him in action yet. What are your thoughts? Leave comments in the talkback below!

I hope it's Zelda.

I hope it's Zelda.

As do I. We're long overdue for Zelda to actually be playable in the series named after her, outside the CDi games of course.  And hopefully it's not just a fake-out like "well, here's the 5 seconds of the game you play as Zelda inbetween 60 hours of Link!"

ShyGuyJune 10, 2014

Maybe he just named his character something different at the start of the game?

pololmejorJune 10, 2014

I don't think I'm the only one that thinks of the posibility of this game being a direct sequel to Skyward Sword. Not only because iof the art style but because of how Skyloft pretty much gains access to the lower lands beneath Skyloft.

It's Link's gratuitous Smash Bros. palette swap doppelganger, Knil!

SupaKirbJune 10, 2014

Link's kin perhaps? I don't know why, but the first thing that came to my mind was his daughter. That might be pushing it. I can see it being Zelda, but the character design looks perhaps like the child of the two if anything. God do I feel like I'm treading fan-fiction waters right now.. But what else could it possibly be!? This Zelda hype is already messing with my ability to function, let alone understand logic!

I thought there was something a little... feminine... about link in that trailer (which is saying something.)

The character displayed in that trailer didn't have a sword and the horse was absolutely not Epona. Zelda would make perfect sense in this case, in which case I wonder if we'll be seeing some sort of duality between the two similar to Spirit Tracks.

It's Raiden.

marvel_moviefan_2012June 10, 2014

I put my money on Link's twin sister we never heard about but somehow she was always there just to further screw up the time line. Otherwise it's just crossdresser link to make up for the other fiasco from last month...

azekeJune 10, 2014

It's Tingle.

marvel_moviefan_2012June 10, 2014

don't say that I want to like this game.

NeoStar9XJune 10, 2014

Interesting comment. The character did look more feminine compared to all the other Link's we've seen. So I wouldn't be surprised if it was Zelda or a sister or someone brand new.

pokepal148Spencer Johnson, Contributing WriterJune 10, 2014

the only case in a zelda game that I can think of where another person other then zelda helped link in combat that could be similar to this is this one.

Perhaps they plan to revisit the idea of a sort of resistance group type thing to have multiple playable characters.

But if we're revisiting zelda conventions then perhaps we will see zelda in a less royal setting (even SS gave her a seemingly lofty position), She is literally another girl in the land of hyrule who just so happens to be involved in some divine mess.

It's Raiden.

MGS canon and Zelda canon one and the same. God what have we done.

It's Link's long, lost son, coming to avenge his father's death only to find out that long ago he had fallen to the dark side.

It's Link's long, lost son, also named Link, coming to avenge his father's death only to find out that long ago he had fallen to the dark side.

Who is this "Link" character?  When I play a Zelda game, the main character is always named "Ass".

Bman87301June 11, 2014

Seeing how it didn't show anyone actually controlling the character, it's very likely a cut scene involving an NPC (perhaps Link's brother, whose encounter with that monster is what sets Link on his quest).

Ian SaneJune 11, 2014

Maybe he thinks the main character is named Zelda and is wondering who this Link guy is we're all talking about.

So which "not Link" is this?  What if he had waffles instead of pancakes for breakfast?  Is it waffle-timeline not-Link or pancake-timeline not-Link?

Seriously though, this is the Zelda series.  What is Aonuma doing try to create intrigue in the story and characters?  We know it's going to end up like something a five year old hopped up on sugar would come up with and will need a chart drawn across three blackboards to connect to the rest of the series.

nickmitchJune 11, 2014

Maybe the whole game is gender-swapped.

SarailJune 11, 2014

Calling it now.

Sequel to Zelda: Adventure of Link - extending the Hero's death timeline.

WahJune 11, 2014

It's Lucario!

I did Asshat for a recent SS playthrough. Lots of choice "Master Asshat" entertainment.

As for this coyness about the identity/gender of the character in the snippet shown, come on now. Remember that concept art reveal of SS that showed Link and Fi, and they were being all mysterious about the fact that Link didn't have a sword? And then people were speculating that Link wouldn't have a sword that time around? It's going to go like that.

CericJune 12, 2014

I'm going to come across gendericist or something but, that looked like a male to me.  Especially the facial expressions that were given.  I personally think its wishful thinking that that model was a girl.  In fact I go as far as to say its a traditional Zelda style male to boot.

It could not be Link.  That be interesting if the story was done in different parts.

Just Link. Then, Female Link and Princess Zelda get married at the end. Take that, Tomodachi Life controversy.

STOP.  Just stop.  There is already to many, "Oh by they way there Lesbians."  Why can't it be Link and Prince Zelda who then gets married at the end?
