Pokémon fans will be returning to Hoenn.

Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire will be coming to Nintendo 3DS worldwide this November.

The teaser trailer revealing this information mentions that these games will have an, "Epic New Adventure." It also mentions players will be able to explore a, "Dramatic New World." While it is a sure thing that these games will allow players to return to Hoenn, it's likely, though unconfirmed, to be a new take on the old region.

What I find more interesting is that Groudon and Kyogre seem to be in a mega form.

CericMay 07, 2014

Cool Box Art... But a Remake?

I Guess I should look forward to "Omega Fire Red"

MythtendoMay 07, 2014

Ruby and Sapphire are widely held as the worst of the mainline Pokemon games, and I do think think they are the worst too, so i'm not sure how many people will be excited by these remakes.

Ruby/Sapphire was my last Pokemon game until X/Y so, yeah, I don't think I'll be getting the game that inspired me to take a ten year break from the series.

So Pokemon is annualized now, right?  Since 2009 they've only missed one year.  Mario has only missed one year since 2007 though we don't know yet if we'll see a Mario platformer in 2014.  So why do I get backlash when I suggest that Nintendo has become unoriginal and just cranks out the same sequels again and again?

Seriously E3 is about a month away, they couldn't hold this info for another month?

I don't know about that. Ruby was my second most favorite mainline Pokemon game after Silver. Personally I found gen 4 to be terrible and gen 5 was merely 'ok' (I felt absolutely no desire to complete the game, as in training my pokemon and beating the Elite Four, like I did for Red, Silver, and Ruby).

Perhaps they don't consider this big news. I'd raise an eyebrow if Nintendo announced a brand new mainline Zelda with a reveal trailer a month before E3.

MythtendoMay 07, 2014

Vahne, I know some people do love Generation III. That's why I said "generally", rather than saying everyone hated it. Maybe a remake could improve it.

And remakes are not really big news, so I am not upset they didn't wait to E3 for it.

broodwarsMay 07, 2014

*yawn* Oh look...another Pokemon game. I guess when your company is bleeding money, you do what you have to do. *shrugs*

TheBigKMay 07, 2014

I may be in the minority here, but I'm actually pretty excited about this. While Ruby and Sapphire may not be my favourite games in the series, the Hoenn region is by far my favourite. The rest, except for Sinnoh, are rather bland and uninteresting. But Hoenn has a wide range of environments different from your usual plains, forests and caves. It has a volcano, an route covered in perpetually raining volcanic ash, a desert, lakes and rivers with little islands, a shipwrecked boat, underwater caverns, the seafloor, a treetop town and a town floating in the ocean and so on. Hoenn is going to look great with the visual style of XY. Hoenn also has some of my favourite Pokémon, like Breloom, Flygon, and Zangoose. I found Kalos to be a boring region overall, so I can't wait to go back to Hoenn. Also, Secret Bases!

Psh! Ya rite! Gen 1 is totally da bomb! Magikarp, Porygon, Beedrill. Hello?
And it, like, totally had the best TV episodes EV-AR! Remember this gem?

Expected/10

Emerald is my least-fave of the mainline games I played, so I'll be skipping this.

Evan_BMay 07, 2014

While I liked the idea of Hoenn's Overworld and a bit of its mythos, it was plagued with awful Pokemon distribution, awful villains, and the worst looking title legendaries in the series, aside from Rayquaza. Unless Game Freak does something worthwhile or interesting with this update, like HG/SS had superior writing, Pokemon followers, and Pokeathelon. However, I devoured Pokemon Y and if this game has as little post-game activities as that did, I'll be passing on it.

Gen III was the worst since Gen I, and Gen I was only bad because of the myriad of game-breaking glitches.

Gen VI, while not as good as Gen V (the best Gen, imo), is leagues better than Gen III, so perhaps we'll finally be able to enjoy a trek across Hoenn that isn't a pain in the ass.

WahMay 07, 2014

YES!!
Fricken yes!
FFFOOOCCCUUUSSS BBBLLLAAASSSTTT!!!

yoshi1001May 07, 2014

Now they can do a combined HD remake of Pokemon Colosseum and Gale of Darkness for Wii U. I would say Pokemon Channel (a game I, for the record, liked) but I suppose Netflix and Hulu make that redundant in most people's eyes.

They've never lowered themselves to remaking a remake... yet. Don't give them any ideas.

Besides, Kanto's on triple-secret probation.

I'm inclined to agree, but I actually do like playing the Gen 3 games that -AREN'T- RSE. A lot of my beef with the game comes from Hoenn's map design, particularly when it comes to routes overlapping each other or backtracking before you get access to the Fly HM... but then of course, that's when the nightmare of all the water routes and Dive start to come into play and make me want to just... not play.

I don't know WHY I'm so bad at Water Routes. perhaps it's the lack of landmarks after a random battle or what, but i feel like I end up spending longer on surf routes then I should, and Surf Routes are a very large percentage of Hoenn's map.

also, Mega Kyogre? I fear if they actually make it able to hit harder than Choice Specs Kyogre somehow, because that thing already wrecks shit hardcore.

CaterkillerMatthew Osborne, Contributing WriterMay 08, 2014

YES! New move tutors and egg moves!!! That's all...  :@

Even though people kept begging for it and expecting this I just didn't think it would happen since it wasn't really necessary with every Pokemon available. This was the least desirable entry into Pokemon ever and I really wish it wasn't being made. But because I am a battle nut who loves new egg moves, abilities and tutors I am going to get it soley for that. Sigh, they got me for life don't they?

Give me another Pokemon Snap please!

Even I was bored with Ruby and Sapphire and I think I am the biggest proudest Pokemon fan here. I'll get it cause I'm a sucker and I'm glad others are getting what they want but sheesh do something with the story please! I really don't want to care about this but I  need to stay up to date in the battle world.

More than Shaymin?

And yeah, I only played Emerald as Ruby and Sapphire didn't interest me as much.  Moving through the game often felt like a chore.  Some people liked the variety in the environments, which I get, but the novelty wore off on me pretty quickly.  And the ocean floor thing was lame.

WahMay 11, 2014

it was the game that introduced me to Poke'mon so please don't dis it.

nickmitchMay 11, 2014

I like the mainline Pokemon games in general.  I wouldn't say any of them are "bad".  Gen III is just my least favorite.  I'm glad they introduced you (and so many) to the series and were able to get you hooked though. :)

WahMay 11, 2014

i just loved Hoenn so much the fantastic cities (underwater, floating, in the trees etc)
All the little islands to explore, the puzzles, and of course the pokemon.
I honestly can not name one bad genIII pokemon.

WahMay 12, 2014

all o.k

KhushrenadaMay 13, 2014

It's true. If those are the worst Pokémon you can come up with then Gen 3 clearly is the greatest generation. Ain't a weak link in the bunch.

CaterkillerMatthew Osborne, Contributing WriterMay 13, 2014

I can't wait until Pokemon really changes. The instant I saw the game was in 3D I didn't get fooled like the Iansanes out there thinking the game had actually changed. I knew what I was getting and while I love X and Y for its battles(even then visually its nothing special),it's still the same old super boring style of exploration.

If the world was actually open and it really felt like I was exploring through trees and caves I'd be content. Still grid based and anything interesting like climbing giant spider webs or swinging across vines only ever happen in gyms and that is soooooooo lame.

At the same time I am the one at fault cause I keep buying these games each and every time. I love the new Pokemon abilities and unspectacular battles. I'm a sucker for it and because of that games like this will keep being made with almost no true change to is exploration mechanics.

CericMay 13, 2014

I'm ready for a Pokemon that is actually about finding, stalking, trapping, training then fighting pokemon. Think Monster Rancher (2 & 4) X Monster Hunter.

You're joking right? Luvdisc simply isn't good for anything at all, it has a design that makes it look like a pillow in the Honeymoon suite, a pitiful movepool, nothing to speak of in terms of stats and nothing to redeem it.

Oh and I forgot to mention the 'copy/paste is a designers best friend' pokemon which are silcoon/cascoon(silcoon will later evolve into beautifly aka, the wannabe butterfree.)

Volbeat/illimuse (they are designwise basically the same pokemon and plusle/minun (if plusle were designed first would that make minun a copy of a copy of pichu (which is basically a copy of pikachu)

Also ludicolo, from the people who brought us jynx we get another ugly racist stereotype.

I never joke about my work, 007.

In fact, all of my the posts I've ever made on PlanetGamecube and NWR have been 100% serious and absolute truth. Even the ones in the Funhouse. I guess in this cynical and sarcastic internet age, it's hard for people to realize facts when they see them.

See, Pokepal148? You just had to ask an expert. Don't you look foolish now.

WahMay 15, 2014

Expert! no way! Pokepal wiped the floor with me in the first battle and the second if it wasn't for my Lucario taking out half his team(stupid earthquake), it would have been the same!

pokepal148Spencer Johnson, Contributing WriterMay 16, 2014

Yeah let me tell you what luvdisc, spinda and castform are good for, comedic articles on smogon

Quote:

Whether Castform the Weather Pokemon can weather the weather is dependent on whether the weather that it's weathering is the proper weather for it to weather. Whether the opponent can weather the weather is also subject to whether the weather that it's weathering is the right weather to weather. Whether Castform can weather the opponent is once again dictated by the weather and whether that weather is the favorable weather for weathering. But most importantly, you should know whether there will be weather to weather rather than what weather they will be weathering and whether they can weather that weather.

Castform's overall low stats means that it'll struggle against many foes, so it'll appreciate support from entry hazards, dual screens, paralysis, and you returning it to its Poké Ball where it can take shelter for the rest of the battle. The items and EVs chosen ensure that Castform hits as hard as possible with Weather Ball, but odds are at the end of the day it's still going to be the equivalent of a wet paper towel fighting a mountain lion, even if it looks like Castform's got the balls to pull it off. Hopefully you'll know better next time.

....

Checks and Counters

If it's not hit super effectively, it counters Castform. If it's bulky enough, it counters Castform. If it has had a single song reach the Billboard Hot 100, it counters Castform. If it knows its 9 times tables, it counters Castform. It is said that Castform's molecules were found to be just like water, so presumably you could just stick it in a kettle and transform it into a nice cup of Earl Grey. Alternatively, mercilessly mock and taunt the trainer who sent out Castform and he'll soon forfeit out of sheer embarrassment

WahMay 18, 2014
