Nintendo Will Host Two Smaller Events at E3 2013, One for Media, One for Partners

They're still using the Nokia Theater (for partners), and they'll be letting select media onto the show floor earlier.

Nintendo will host two events at E3 2013, a partner presentation in the Nokia Theater and a media event on the show floor before it opens, instead of their traditional E3 press conference on the Tuesday morning before the show kicks off. Charlie Scibetta, Nintendo of America's Senior Director of Corporate Communications confirmed this in a PR e-mail.

"Beyond the news that will be communicated through Nintendo Direct videos in the run up to E3, at the show itself we’re hosting two smaller events on Tuesday morning before the LACC opens instead of just our traditional one event," Scibetta said. "A media event and a partner presentation will both occur that morning."

What does that mean for us at Nintendo World Report? Well, we'll be getting you hands-on impressions of Nintendo's E3 games right away instead of having to wait for the show floor to open. What does that mean for you as a reader? Nothing drastically different than past years (hopefully), as Scibetta added "While the audiences will be different between the two events, both will occur on the Tuesday morning of E3 (June 11) which is the date and time period the public has come to expect for Nintendo to deliver E3 news."

E3 2013 begins on June 11 and runs until June 13. As of now, we know that Nintendo will be showing off a new 3D Mario and Mario Kart for Wii U. The new Super Smash Bros. will also be shown off in some capacity. Additionally, we'll likely see demos for The Legend of Zelda 3DS, Mario Golf: World Tour, Yarn Yoshi, Yoshi's Island 3DS, and the variety of announced and unannounced games Nintendo has lined up.

See below for the full quote from Nintendo of America:

"As you’ve already seen, a lot of news about Nintendo games and services that traditionally would be held until E3 is being delivered this year through Nintendo Directs, and various press events. This approach will continue between now and E3. No matter where you are in the world, you’ll be fully informed. We look forward to continuing to provide you with Nintendo news and content in ways you haven’t before experienced. Beyond the news that will be communicated through Nintendo Direct videos in the run up to E3, at the show itself we’re hosting two smaller events on Tuesday morning before the LACC opens instead of just our traditional one event. A media event and a partner presentation will both occur that morning. While the audiences will be different between the two events, both will occur on the Tuesday morning of E3 (June 11) which is the date and time period the public has come to expect for Nintendo to deliver E3 news.

At the Nokia theater we’ll meet with business partners (retailers, publishers, analysts, etc.) from the NOA territory and discuss our plans for driving the business and providing tailored information that this group finds useful to their operations. Nintendo has done these same type of business meetings at past E3 shows, but has not in the past few years. This year we are returning to that business partner meeting format. New this year at our booth in the LACC, prior to the show opening, we’ll invite a small group of media to play our games. We will have a strong line-up of beloved franchise experiences available for immediate hands-on play. We are continuing to consider exciting new ways to bring the news of our games and information directly to the players at home during the E3 timeframe, and will have more to say about that at a later date."

I wonder if the Partners presentation will still be streamed in some way, dry though it would undoubtably be. I'd actually be very curious to see how Nintendo thinks it can market the Wii U out of "flop" status, and E3 is usually where we get an explanation of Nintendo's strategy/mission statement for the next year.

Yay?

Good. Pitch these sales data to those to care.

That's my sentiment as well. I can care less about the numbers during an event like E3. The games are the only thing will make the big difference between a positive showing or utter disaster.

You mean you 'couldn't' care less.

Sorry, but that drives me mad.

That's a pretty poor excuse for sarcasm. If you're going to be sarcastic or ironic I usually find that being hyperbolic works best. 'I can care less' is kind of a non-statement. If you're going for ironic sarcasm it helps to flip your meaning on it's head. 'I couldn't care less' means that the thing you're talking about is literally the least interesting thing in the world to you. 'I can care less' just means that there are things you find less interesting than the thing being discussed. That's some mighty weak sarcasm.

I would have went with,

'Aww man! What's the point in even watching E3 press conferences if they're not going to throw mind numbing sales figures in my face to obscure the fact that they have no games to show?'

That's just me though. I like my sarcasm...well, you know...sarcastic.

This is what the original announcement should have been.  Another PR mess up by Nintendo Folks.  They were Knee Pads with Guns pointed at their feet.  It just simpler that way.

red14April 25, 2013

It's funny, it's like Nintendo knows how badass they are, and they don't need some huge presentation to show it. With Sony and Microsoft, it's like boasting.

SonofMrPeanutApril 25, 2013

This does mean a great thing for when a Direct is given:  No more Sales Numbers!!!

Every year people complain about it, wishing the presentation could just move back to more announcements, and now we've got this Investors Meeting to act as a sort of lightning rod for dry statistics.  I wish Sony & Microsoft run with a similar meeting next year.

The original announcement was a comment made in an investor Q&A, in Japanese. Sounds like something got lost in translation.

The more I think about this the more it makes sense to me. There's a ton of fluff in these presentations, not just from Nintendo but from Sony and Microsoft. The best part of these things are the few really cool reveals and announcements which haven't really been worth watching the entire conference for. Then again, they're not really meant specifically for consumers anyway so splitting the conference into the part I care about and the part I don't care about is probably for the best. Nintendo is taking a lot of the hoopla out of it which is fine. Having two smaller events doesn't necessarily mean they're having less of a presence than previous years.

E3 Is dying anyways and with nintendo doing this. It saves money..But as for the other two coming consoles nothing makes me want to get on..Ps4 is to much like the ps3 and 720 always having to be online and the price tag im sure will be high and if it's 500 or 600 i'll pass...Well I could always get ouya or play more on the pc

VahneApril 25, 2013

This MUCH better for us gamers. Sadly, the Internet will continue chirping about how Nintendo won't be at E3 and that no one will care.

UncleBobRichard Cook, Guest ContributorApril 26, 2013

You know, I remember tons of comments about how no one cared about the sales numbers and how Nintendo should remove those from the presentations.

And I remember trying to explain to people that the sales numbers was the main reason FOR the presentation.

Looks like I was right all along. :D

BlkPaladinApril 26, 2013

This is actually a fairly smart business move on the part of Nintendo. For all those who are complaining about the move. This allows Nintendo to focus on each audience individually. Which will be good for those who love the numbers of the business and for the fans who are hungry for information.

Plus it allows Nintendo do things like demo and exclusive videos during each day of the conference and even before. With this stream of information even smaller titles will get their time in light.

And it seems people like the declare the winner based off of the press event and there is a lot that can go wrong with a big all encompassing presentation.

ShyGuyApril 26, 2013

Big deal.

Get it? Another example of sarcasm. I agree that it isn't very good sarcasm, but it is a common American colloquialism
