Wii U GamePad's Wireless Range Discussed

It can be taken away from the system a good distance, but not overly far.

The Wii U GamePad has the best performance when within approximately 24 feet of the system, according to Bill Trinen in an interview with 1UP.

"They had a very precise number at one point. In meters it's like eight meters. In feet it's about 24 feet. That's for best performance," Trinen said when asked whether there was a limit to the controller's range.

Under good conditions, you will likely be able to push the system's wireless capabilities a little more, or take a dip in performance if you would like to sit a few extra feet away.

Wiimote was said to be 10 feet, yet there's proof that it's range is actually around 400 feet. Then again the GamePad has to receive a live video feed of the game instead of just relaying motion and button input...but we'll see for ourselves what the range is once we've got our hands on it.

Not surprised, but that's a good thing. Nintendo is pretty conservative with the numbers they release. I think they said the Wavebird's range was something like 20 or 30 feet. Back in the day, I walked out into the street to test it and unless my brother has been lying to me all these years, the actual range curb stomped that estimate.

Not bad, way better than the Wii remotes, no complaints here.

For pointing with the Wiimote, I could never be more than 10 feet away, but for just using the buttons, I could be pretty far away.

That "10 feet" figure was actually only referring to the IR pointer functionality (which I can confirm first hand, IS limited to 10 feet unless you're using a more powerful third-party sensor bar). The the 400 foot range you're referring to is the Bluetooth communication range which was never claimed to be limited to 10 feet.
