Mario's fortune extends beyond the virtual.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 has sold over one million copies in Japan after five weeks of release.

Media Create, a Japanese company that tracks the sales of digital entertainment, stated that the game has gone on to sell 1,068,878 units since its release on July 28. In comparison, Super Mario 3D Land took eight weeks to reach similar numbers.

People can cry out "same old same old" all they want. The casual person prefers 2D side scrolling over 3D worlds from now until eternity. Still need to buy either game though, lol

I sort of tune people out when they use the word "rehash" when describing this game. There is nothing in the level design that says that, and that is the most important part of a 2D platformer. Not a sterile visual style or recycled music.

I don't consider the game to be a rehash as much as I consider it to be more of an expansion pack of levels for NSMB - with an extra mode (Coin Rush) thrown in for good measure.

And that's why I absolutely will not purchase this game at its current MSRP.

When it goes down to $19.99, though...I'll buy it in a heartbeat. But it's not worth it at its current asking price...from my perspective.

Not surprising.

I think the more interesting question is: How many millions will it end up selling? Can it reach the astronomical numbers of its DS and Wii brethren?
