Nintendo is finally getting in on the science fiction trilogy.

Mass Effect 3 is coming to Wii U, confirming rumors we reported earlier today. Little was said of this Wii U version of the last entry in the Mass Effect trilogy as it was only acknowledged as part of a third party sizzle reel during Nintendo's E3 press event.

Expect more details from EA later today.

Between the ending controversy and the lack of Mass Effects 1 or 2 on the Wii U (that we know of), I don't see any reason why anyone should buy this version of the game.  If you don't have a PS3 or 360, get the PC versions of the trilogy.  If you don't have a powerful-enough gaming PC...get a better one.  Seriously, this is like starting the Star Wars trilogy with Return of the Jedi or your favorite serialized TV series with the last episode.

And no, if Mass Effect 2 PS3's terrible "interactive comic" is any indication, EA is not likely to make a recap for ME3 that would be an appropriate substitute for the actual Mass Effects 1 and 2.

Didn't you say this wasn't going to happen? I remember saying it should, but you said it wouldn't.... well it looks like it is. :)

This is good news. Now where is Resident Evil 6, Dead Space 3, BlOps 2, and Hitman: Absolution for the Wii U? Where is Tomb Raider? Why can't I have everything that I want on the Wii U?

I think some of those games will eventually get ported.

And for the love of Jebus, you're on a computer right now. If you want to play Mass Effect, get it on PC, kytim. There's no point in playing ME3 without the first 2. That'd be like watching Return of the Jedi without A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back. Star Wars is a trilogy for a reason. Yes, I said trilogy.

I abhor PC gaming.

I made the mistake of overestimating Electronic Arts' respect for Bioware's vision, and somehow underestimated Electronic Arts' desperation for pure cash-grabs.  Obviously with everything else that has come out about Mass Effect 3 since then (I believe I said that 4-5 months ago), I was wrong about that on many, many counts....unfortunately.  :'(

In my defense, though, I do believe I said that Mass Effect 3 "shouldn't" be released on Wii U (because of the lack of Mass Effects 1-2), not that it "wouldn't."  ;)

CericJune 05, 2012

I agree.  I haven't play Mass Effect 3 yet but I've played 1 and 2, and while I think they could have handle the player transfer better, more like an old Sierra game, it did enhance the experience some.

Mass Effect is the same game on PC. Sure, people weren't happy with the ending, but the entire point of that series is to play them in order because the choices you make.

Doesn't the exclusive publishing deal Microsoft has over Mass Effect 1 expire at some point? Maybe it already has expired, or will expire soon... and if that's the case EA could do a "Mass Effect Trilogy" and have all three games on one disc. This would make perfect sense on the Wii U.

I can't imagine that exclusive publishing deal being permanent. Does anyone know if its permanent or not, and if not when it expires?

Ian SaneJune 05, 2012

Getting a "big" game like this is good but this specific game is a waste.  The problem is that because it's rather stupid to only have access to the third game I can't tell if this is legitimate support from EA or just a lame cash grab.  Does EA actually care or are they just throwing together some port to get into the launch.

AdrockJune 06, 2012

If this is a lame cash grab, it's one of the least thought out cash grabs in the history of cash grabs. There are better choices. EA could have ported a Dead Space Collection in preparation for the 3rd installment next year. Porting only Mass Effect 3 is an especially bad idea because the game's main hook is its narrative and how the player affects it through all 3 titles. EA should care because this is a colossal waste of money and resources that could be better spent elsewhere, even on something not Wii U related.

Chozo GhostJune 06, 2012

A better choice might have been Battlefield 3. This would be especially true if Black Ops 2 isn't coming, because then BF3 would have no competition in that area. There were rumors a long time ago that Battlefield 3 would come to the Wii U, but EA didn't say anything, so I guess those rumors were fake....

What is really disappointing is Mass Effect 3 is the ONLY game EA has announced. Where's Madden? Where's BF3? Where's all that other crap they own? All the Wii U gets from them is one game and that's it?

oh fuck this noise, im still waiting for Shenmue 3, Shenmue 2 ended on a  CLIFFHANGER

its been 11 years and still no ending.

What makes you think BioWare weren't the ones who wanted to do this?

Though they could  have updated KotoR and I'll bet you that would have been a HUGE hit.

Because BioWare has more respect for their storytelling than to release the END of a story arc FIRST on Wii U, with none of the character-building of the first two Mass Effects.

TJ SpykeJune 06, 2012

I don't think they do. Besides, it's possible ME2 can still arrive on Wii U (maybe as a eShop release). It's not possible for the first one to arrive though.

Chozo GhostJune 06, 2012

I think its likely they will toss in an interactive comic at a bare minimum, so at least the basics of the story from the first game are covered. Its also not impossible they could bundle ME2 or even ME1 (if that exclusive deal has expire... does anyone know if it has or when it will?) which would make the Wii U version of the game more like "Mass Effect Trilogy".

Maybe EA doesn't want to announce it as "Mass Effect Trilogy" just yet because they still want Mass Effect 3 to sell as much as possible, since its still a relatively new game. Maybe them calling it "Mass Effect 3" on the Wii U is just a ploy to fool people into thinking its not the complete trilogy so they don't hold back on buying what's already out?

Why not? I keep asking what the terms of that exclusive publishing deal Microsoft has were and no one answers, so I assume no one knows... well if no one here knows that's fine, but since we don't know we also don't know that its permanent... and personally I don't think its likely that it is permanent. Maybe the exclusive deal was for 5 years? Well guess what, 2007 when the first game came out was exactly 5 years ago, so just maybe that deal has just recently expired? It would make sense to me.
