Wii U Will Feature Two Versions of the Home Screen

A simplified version of the home screen will also be at players' finger tips.

During today's Nintendo Direct event, Satoru Iwata spent some time discussing the features of the Wii U home screen.

It appears the main home menu view, which includes all the Mii characters and game application tiles, is not the only view players have to navigate the system menu. A simplified Wii-style menu showing games and other in-built apps will be displayed on the screen of the Wii U GamePad.

It appears these two different viewpoints can also be flipped between the TV and the GamePad.

Yeah on some other site people where freeking out about the Miiverse screen. I keep requesting that they rewatch that part and listen to what Iwata was saying about the actually menu is on the Upad and that you can switch what show what.

I hope they allow for customized Home Screens.

Maybe some official Home Screen packs or some user created ones in the eShop.

meh, I still want the option to not have miiplaza 2.0 be my default screen on the tv. I want a clean, simple interface that doesn't clutter things up. the sony xmb is actually very good in this regard imo.

I would hate the Mii's on the main screen if they weren't actual people playing and discussing games. That is awesome!

every single time? I wouldn't mind the app if that's just what it was, another app. and we could make user built communities. I don't care what randoms have to say.

Miiverse on TV while homescreen on controller? Absolutely brilliant, I love it!

I sorta wish that Nintendo Channel was the Wii Home screen, so I think I'd be jazzed to log into the Miiverse all the time.

I guess it'll look something like the 3DS home screen on the controller, with your games and app icons.
But the TV will show the Miiverse thing, with big floating icons and your friends gathering round chatting about it.
It's like Twitter (trending) but just for your games, and with actual real world use. Can't wait to use this thing!!

Sounds amazingly ambitious, unique and a wonderfully fun idea - well done Nintendo!

For people who don't have access to internet the Miiverse screen on the TV is going to be kind of useless.

I  think in the case you don't have internet it'll still show Miis from your own console. I suspect that players will have to choose an active Mii when they play games or post messages, and that way if you don't have internet other players in the house and family members will have their activity and messages displayed their, almost a bit like Animal Crossing had mothers leaving mail for their children who would play the game later in the day.

Do those people still exist? Or will they exist by the time this thing comes out?

Man this is going to be so great for trading and battling pokemon! All these possibilities are just flooding my mind! I had this wonderful dream last night I was posting messages through the Miiverse about Smash Wii U and just unlocked King K Rool.

Also, 3DS/Wii U viral Miis.

That's what I DON'T like about it.  The fuck do I want a bunch of comments from strangers in my face every time I load up a game.  I fully intend to use the simple screen layout 100% of the time, if I buy a Wii U.

Nintendo is all about this social stuff but there is a certain anti-social element of videogames that I actually enjoy.  Do they not realize this?  When I play a game, it's often when I have some time to myself.  It's like sitting and reading a book by yourself.  It has appeal as a solitary activity away from the busy nature of life.  And if I want it to be a social activity, I can play multiplayer or go online.  But for a single player game?  Having stupid little comments would be like having other people's comments appearing on your kindle while you're trying to read.
