Four players can take on the role of the pink blob in the upcoming Wii adventure.

Up to four players can play as Kirby in Kirby's Return to Dream Land, Nintendo of Europe confirmed today.

While it was commonly known that the game would feature four-player platforming similar to New Super Mario Bros. Wii, it was believed that players could only play as one Kirby, leaving the rest of the characters to be filled by series regulars like Meta Knight and King DeDeDe.

Each player will now be able to take control of a different colored Kirby, complete with the copy ability. They can also drop in and out whenever they please, so theoretically, players can switch between Waddle Dee and a yellow Kirby any time they please.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land is set to be released in Europe in December, where it is called Kirby's Adventure Wii. It will come out this year in other regions, but the specifics aren't set yet.

Talkback

Good to hear this, all the previous info made it sound like only one player could be Kirby and others had to be the other characters.

If this knowledge was known at E3, this would have been my game of show.

Stupid Nintendo...
Stupid PR plans...

CericAugust 17, 2011

I hope you can take it the other way and have a four player army of Waddle Dee.

This is good to hear. I actually wonder if this is something they added in due to the responses from E3.

If NSMBWii is any indication, player one will have to be Kirby like how they had to be Mario.

I will probably end up playing this game by myself, so I'll still be disappointed if I can't choose my character.

I thought we got word that the real title of the game was "Kirby: Return to Dreamland"?

Did I just dream(land) that?

I think it was for a short while but it was changed recently.

AFAIK, it went from Kirby Wii to Kirby's Return to Dream Land.

It's going to suck when your buddies steal the sword power right in front of you.

I wonder if there will be crazy cooperative combinations that will make difficult situations easier.

I was actually thinking about this when the news broke. Maybe the level design will be varied to compliment all the combonations.

Didn't I hear this news like two months ago?

Chocobo_RiderAugust 17, 2011

yea... I'm willing to bet these guys know what they're talking about: http://kirby.wikia.com/wiki/Kirby:_Return_to_Dream_Land

TJ SpykeAugust 17, 2011

Anybody can start and edit a wiki, doesn't mean they know what they are talking about.

Siliconera and Destructoid have reported this, with Joystiq picking up the story as well. That Kirby Wiki cites no source for the North American name, only the European name. So I would go with the reliable gaming site that spoke to a Nintendo rep rather than a wiki that has no source.

My interest in this game is now quadrupled. Still looks bland compared to Epic Yarn, but we obviously don't know everything about it yet.

Chocobo_RiderAugust 18, 2011

Looks like the new name stemmed from a Nintendo Power poll (as supported by GoNintendo's story).  So, my guess is that NP just got it wrong and everyone ran with it?

Looks like EU has taken an entirely different approach and officially named the game "Kirby's Adventure Wii."

....  at this point I'm thinking we should just wait for the box to appear on store shelves and hope for the best =)

Everything looks bland compared to Epic Yarn.  The most beautiful sunset has no meaning after playing through this masterpiece.

CericAugust 18, 2011

lol, Eat the other Kirby's to steal their powers.

TJ SpykeAugust 18, 2011

That would be cool if you could do that. Nice way to get back at your bud for taking a good power before you could get to it.

If Kirby sucks up another non-powered Kirby.... would he look like a Kirby wearing a Kirby hoodie? does he become a super Meta Kirby? .... or MetaKnight? does the universe implode? does the ground start to feel like ... pants?

where are Stephen Hawking and Bill Nye when you need them?

TJ SpykeAugust 18, 2011

If they do it like the Smash Bros. games, nothing will happen if you suck up another un-powered Kirby (though in those games I don't think you got anything even if the other Kirby had a power).

Co-op, people! Co-op!

Hellz yea, Mop it up!

It is actually instances like these where I do feel Nintendo needs to step up their online services.  Imagine the bliss if we could play KRtD, NSMBW, DKCR, S+P2 or any other local co-op game ONLIIIIIIIIIIINNEEEE!!!!

Instead, gamers like us have to settle for FFCC:Longest Title in History of Time. =)
