Questing on two different platforms might be a real possibility.

Dragon Quest X might include Wii U feature support, according to Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada. The company had already announced that Dragon Quest X is coming to Wii.

In a shareholder’s meeting yesterday, Wada was questioned on the motivation behind delivering the game for Wii when the system is past its prime. The CEO responded that the company is seeing whether the game can be made compatible with both Wii and Wii U systems and is currently doing technical investigations into Wii U support.

Wada was also asked if he expects the Wii ports of Dragon Quest 1, 2 and 3 to sell since they are each straight ports of the Famicom and Super Famicom versions. He responded that they were being left as-is in order to celebrate the franchise’s 25th anniversary.

Dragon Quest is a highly successful RPG game that has been around since the late 1980s.

This is a no brainer. It's better for gamers, better for Nintendo, and likely better for Square.

Yep, With DQ its about how many of a platform is out their to absorb it.  Of course they'll put it still on Wii even with the WiiU released.  Wii will have a vastly larger base for at least a year if not several.  Now being able to pull a GBC style with it be pretty sweet.

I think many of us called DQX forward compatibility a long time ago.

Now hopefully Nintendo does the right thing with BC compatibility and allows for native HD rendering of Wii games and we could have an HD DQX when played on a WiiU that also takes advantage of some WiiU features.

DQX is gonna be a big seller no matter what. They might as well also make it a reason for Non-Wii owners to purchase a WiiU instead for bonus features and turn late adopting hold-outs into early adopters instead.

Nintendo has already announced that the Wii U will not upscale any Wii games played on it.

As for DQ X, after the eternity that this game has taken to come out, I figured this game was probably just going to go to the Wii U but I suppose being a forwards compatible game sort of works, too.

I think it was Reggie that answered the "upscaling" question, but it sounded like he didn't fully understand what was being asked. But upscaling is not what I'm talking about anyways.

We know the hardware isn't finished yet and things are still evolving, so it may not be too late for Nintendo to decide that they don't want the WiiU to just downclock and shut most of it's features off to go into a "Wii mode" like the Wii did for the GC.
How does the 3DS handle DS games? does it revert into a DS mode for games making all other 3DS stuff (such as multi-taksing & friends list) disabled? Because if that's the case, then forward compatible may not even be an option.

Yes, from what we can tell.  Its to the point where you have to setup the Wireless for DS games seperately.  Streetpass does not work in DS mode.  It throws you to the DS OS when you do Download stations so it becomes a DS for all intents and purposes and the Circle Pad become a D-Pad for all intents and purposes.

If they ever decide to bring back Dragon Quest Monsters, they need to rename it Dragon Warrior Monsters like back then. They should have named it Dragon "Warrior" Monsters Joker on the DS. It just sounds so much better!
I've got nothing against the actual Dragon Quest series though.

Dragon Quest is supremely popular in Japan, yes?  Normally, it isn't a system seller because it's brought out on whichever console is already the most popular, but Wii U special features could be a big deal depending on what they are.  The only example I can think of is the GBA-only shop in the Zelda Oracle games, which was pretty insignificant.  Hopefully, Nintendo will recognize the possible coup and work closely with Squeenix to do something worthwhile.

Edit: I can't make this stupid post not end in "null null null."

Moving the menus to the uMote and other UI elements that don't need to be on the screen and a traditional control scheme would probably be enough.  How many people bought TP GCN because of the traditional controls...

I just wanted to add that Siliconera was reporting that
"Square Enix is in the technical investigation phase when it comes to Wii U. The company is also examining whether to support Wii U with a launch title."

They've got about a year till launch. Wouldn't that mean a port of something that's already coming up?
FFXIII Vs?
What games do they have that aren't seeing release till sometime mid-2012?

I predict the sequel to Dragon Quest Swords:  Dragon Quest Shields.

Whatever happens, I hope the game still releases onto the Wii. I don't like to buy systems at launch due to the inevitable lack of games, so I wouldn't be able to get it for some time if that were the case. It'd be neat if they took the approach found in the late GBC Zelda games, which had special shops available only when the game is played on a Game Boy Advance. I don't know if a Wii disc would have enough space to store such extra Wii U features if they wanted something major like HD, but that would be the best way to go if they can pull it off.

The unconfirmed-but-we-know-it's-coming up-port of FF Type 0, and possibly the International version of FFXIII-2 (lol).

We also don't know what's going on with XIII Versus, a game Square-Enix consistently refuses to show, yet started production right along with the original FF XIII.  XIII-2 is a hard-sell on the Wii U unless S-E ports over the original XIII, but Versus XIII seems to have absolutely nothing to do with the two main XIII games (as does Type-0) so it's probably an easier sell.
