Nintendo 3DS Firmware Update Crashes Ridge Racer 3D

Fix coming later this month.

A bug in the June 6 3DS firmware update can cause Ridge Racer 3D to hang, according to a notice posted by Nintendo. After updating to the latest firmware version, backing out of Race Select or Machine Select in Ridge Racer 3D results in a frozen game.

Nintendo recommends that players simply avoid those actions, and rebooting if the system hangs. They will upload a new system update in the middle of June that fixes the problem.

Oh, well this sucks for the Ridge Racer 3D player. Shame that QC didn't catch it.

Well they did catch it but it wasn't deemed big enough to delay the patch any further, I would have made the same call.  That's why they've got a patch on the way to fix it.  Though what I'm curious about is why that was affected at all.

The firmware on a 3DS is an operating system.  It provides standard features that games can use, and continues to run in the background so applications can multitask.  While that doesn't tell us exactly why Ridge Racer is being affected, apparently it was doing something that was okay in the original firmware but with the new features of the new firmware it causes a conflict.

The 2.0.0_U update enables automatic system updates, so the mid-month update to fix Ridge Racer should be automatically applied once it's available.

I can't DL the update, it just tells me that my system is up to date even though the spotpass announcement of it has arrived already.

SpotPass message says this evening.

I tried to update twice at lunch, even though it'll probably be worse to know it's in my backpack with the new update and I can't play it.  Oh well, at least I'll get to watch the OK-Go video one last time.  :(

Maybe the SpotPass update didn't say it, but the press release said the evening of June 6 Pacific.

The US one does.  It even tells you it will crash Ridge Racer.  Unless they changed it from this morning.

Expect your update to go live after 5pm and most-likely during the Sony Press Conference.

Boo, still no update.

I can't wait to pay $4 for Super Mario Land!

Yay, just before 9:45pm PDT the update became available.  :D
