3DS Able to Import Miis From Wii, Unable to Export Them

Nintendo of America's Bill Trinen states that 3DS Miis are "too complex" for Wii.

In an interview with Joystiq.com, Nintendo of America's Bill Trinen noted that you will be able to import a Mii from the Wii to the 3DS, but it will be impossible to export a Mii from the 3DS to Wii.

The Product Marketing Manager for NOA called the process a "one way transfer." He noted that the 3DS' Mii Maker has additional facial features (such as eyes and hairstyles) that are not present in Wii's Mii Channel.

As previously noted, the 3DS will be able to create Miis automatically. Using the dual cameras on the back of the unit, the 3DS' Mii Maker will take a 3D picture and convert it into a Mii.

One way ticket to paradise.

TJ SpykeJanuary 19, 2011

In other words, Nintendo is to lazy to update the Wii's Mii Channel to add those features.

Wii would explode at the thought of 3D NOA REGGIE.

Well, they'd also have to ensure compatibility with all games that use Miis... given the way their other system infrastructure has worked, they probably didn't create a robust-enough solution to handle future attribute expansion.

I'm pretty sure the information for Miis is stored on each individual game... so Nintendo can't really update the Mii Channel and have the new Mii options appear in all currently-released titles.

stupid question:

So that mii i had on my wii since launch I send to my 3DS I'll lose it forever? Or will it just copy it over. One way transfer is scary idea

Spak-SpangJanuary 19, 2011

But at least they added new eyes, hair, and gave us more options to create robust and exciting Miis.  Hopefully you can have the same amount of customizable fun with the 3DS Miis as you could with the Wii.

MaryJaneJanuary 19, 2011

According to Engadget, the 3DS does not actually "automatically" create a Mii from your picture, you still have to select certain things like eye and skin color, and the camera based Mii doesn't pick up thing like glasses and beards, but they can be added later.

The European trailer showed as much -- it didn't pick up the guy's beard.

TJ SpykeJanuary 19, 2011

I am not surprised Nintendo may have lied a little in 3DS videos. One of the Japanese videos showed a person taking a picture and then a completed Mii popping up like 2 seconds later.

The cameras are probably not good enough to discern coloration well, and if they got it wrong, you can be sure that certain parties would be all over Nintendo.

*if* that's the case (and I doubt it is), then copy the Mii to your Wii Remote, then move the Mii to your 3DS, then copy the Mii back from your Wii remote.

"One-way copy" would be a better description.

Takin' names, Miis, and souls.

Kytim89January 19, 2011

Will they be exportable to the Wii 2?

ThomasOJanuary 19, 2011

I am assuming that when Mii Channel development was finished, the "palette," so to speak, was finalized. All Wii games all need to contain the information for rendering Mii characters (it doesn't load things like textures or models from the Wii System Memory, only the necessary information), so adding more features to the Mii Channel just wouldn't work, because it would no longer be compatible with the palette in the Wii software. So, if a 3DS Mii was to be loaded to a Wii and then into a game, the game might crash because it has no data to render the Mii character from the palette it was originally given. Of course, this is just a guess, so...

@Kytim

Is that even a real question?

I want to leave this alone because attacking people isn't my style, but what exactly are you smoking?

You've posted a couple things today that have me thinking that I'm missing out on some serious fun by not using the drug you're on that makes you live in your own personal world.

Only you would ask a question that would require a time traveling DeLorean to answer.

Kytim89January 19, 2011

What I meant was will the Miis be transferable from the Wii to the 3DS and eventually the Wii 2. I had to leave in a hurry and did not think that post out very well before I posted it. However, if anyone wants me to leave this forum I will do so and never return.

BlackNMild2k1January 19, 2011

We have no idea what the Wii2 is or when it will be announced, so we have no idea what will or will not be possible on the Wii2. We know as much about the Wii2 as you do and that is NOTHING. When we know more about the Wii2 you can be assured that there will likely be a news story on the main page and a thread somewhere in the forum that will share everything that is known so that everyone that visits the internet will all have the same opportunity as you to know exactly as much as the rest of us.

Anyone, huh? Hmmm...

ToruresuJanuary 20, 2011

This seems like a novel idea. I wonder if the transfered Mii could be edited to add new facial features, or if it won't let me because "it was made by someone else".

Also, Kytim89, I don't think anyone wants you to leave.

Also, what's up with Morari? Is he or is he not banned? O.o

BlackNMild2k1January 20, 2011

Banned!!? They could never ban NWR's "#1 HALO FAN AND AWESOME POSTER".

Don't be ridiculous now. lol

Gunna take a picture of my dick and see what it generates :)

I had a Mii made using my picture at the NYC event and it wasn't a very good likeness. One thing that was pretty impressive was the two face blend feature. It was sort of like the old sketch on Conan where they would show what two celeberties children would look like. My face was combined with the guy demoing the unit and it ended up looking like Geoffrey Arend from Super Troopers (one of the kids who get arrested).

Once you go Cosmo Black, you can never go back!

Until the Candy Apple Red is available that is.
