Nintendo will be lowering the price of the DS in Japan, as well as releasing the DSi in three new aesthetically pleasing colors.

In the near future, all three currently available DS hardware varieties in Japan will see a price change. Beginning on June 19, the DSi will see its retail price drop from ¥18,900 ($207) to ¥15,000 ($164). The DSi LL (DSi XL in North America) will go from ¥20,000 ($219) to ¥18,000 ($197). For the DS Lite, which is currently retailing at ¥16,800 ($184), Nintendo will allow retailers to choose their own price. Nintendo instituted a similar open pricing scheme for the GameCube in late 2005.

In addition to the price drops, Nintendo will also begin shipping the DSi LL in three new colors (shades of green, yellow, and blue).

I wonder when/if they will do this elsewhere. DS sales may be slowing in Japan (although still outselling PSP), but they are still very strong here in the US.

Japan was paying $175 for a DS Lite? That kind of makes the American DSi pricing not seem as bad.

TJ SpykeJune 02, 2010

And that is why DS Lite sales were like 10% of the total DS sales in the last few months.

I wrote the wrong price for the DS Lite in Japan. Instead of 16,000 Yen ($175), the DS Lite is actually retailing for 16,800 Yen ($184). Keep in mind the high dollar amount may have a bit to do with changing exchange rates.

Man I was waaay off on my dollar amount guesstimates.

I was still on the mindset that Yen was pretty close to 1/100th of a $
as in 16800 Yen was pretty close to $168.

But I'm guessing that this price drop doesn't hit the US till fall and give the DSL/i/XL ine more big XMas before the 3DS launch in Jan/Feb 2011

I can say that in Europe the DSi is 169€ (206 USD) while the DS Lite is 149€ (182 USD) (or at least that's how it was when the DSi launched).

$182 for a DS Lite? Man, what is Nintendo thinking? They are $130 here (and have been since it was released).

There not "thinking" any thing. After growing up in Detroit MI, and visiting Ontario,Canada quite a bit in my teen to to adult years, and now have been stationed all over the world..... North America gets luxuries at a waaaaay lower price especially when our dollar is so week now. Expendable income is a slightly different concept in places like Japan, Europe and the UK.

Just yesterday I went to a car audio store to purchase a wiring harness for my amp at a Japanese store. The harness was 6,090Yen($66.88). But then I found a higher quality one on my military installation for $50(4,553Yen) huge diffrence.

But any way it looks like Europe and the United Kingdom is getting the same treatment according to Official Nintendo Magazine.

OH LAWD HAMMUCY! I got the special pikachu DSL because I needed a bright color, yellow or orange and now It seems to be on its last legs. But now I am so glad I waited! Man I don't know which color I want!

Then again by the time I get this one I know 3DS will be right around the corner.
